Oh heck, eventually got on and found one of my rellies in the Chelsea pensioners section.
Too much information - he had 2 very nasty stds. Didn't really want to know that.
Searching for Barclay Aberdeenshire, Stewart Edinburgh, Brown Edinburgh & Uphall, Finlayson E Lothian, Fairley & Renton E & W Lothian for starters!

Finally managed to get one 1911 census. That was it. Not sure I'll bother on Friday - too frustrating, don't think my bloodpressure could take it again

Well, I just hope England are in the competition for as long as possible, so that we are in with a sporting (ha ha) chance on FMP!

I logged onto the site at 4.00 am my time and it was 5.35 before I downloaded my first census image. In the next 85 minutes I downloaded eleven. Once you manage to get onto the right page the search seems to be quicker if you search for the most uncommon name in the household.

By using the free search I had all the families sorted out months ago. I knew who was in each household but not the details so I didn’t have to muck around finding people. Here are some hints about getting lots of information for free.
http://www.1911census.org.uk/1911search.htm

A three hour freebie during a football game could only have been dreamed up by some individual with the brain of a pimply faced kid. I wonder what the National Archives thinks of this circus. Even when it was quite obvious to FMP that they weren’t delivering the spirit of the promised “we'll stop charging for 3 hours, which should give you plenty of time to explore what we have to offer” they still appear to have cut the thing off right on the dot.

Had the site been working normally I could have downloaded the eleven images in less than five minutes. There was no time to explore, only time to wait.

If I can stay awake I’ll have another go next time.

Well, it wasn't any better for us with subscriptions.

FMP obviously hadn't banked on so many people trying to use the site. I was already logged in when the free period started, but as soon as I saw the delays starting to bite, I logged off again. Spoke to a friend who also has a sub and she logged off as well. Hopefully subscribers will have stayed offline during the freebie period to let others have a chance.

Hi Alan
I logged onto the site at 4.00 am
Crikes...that is dedication!!
Once you manage to get onto the right page the search seems to be quicker if you search for the most uncommon name in the household.
With a 19 year old male Smith having left home by then (not with the rest of the family in 1911), I've absolutely no idea where he is or what household he is likely to be living in. That is why I hope England are in the game long term!!

Best wishes
Lesley

From what I saw, I'd not bank on that! Periods of brilliance combined with others of utter disappointment.

P.S. In memory of my husband, I support England but only when they aren't playing Scotland!

More flexible times on find my past for non UK researchers

Post by kenspeckle » Thu Jun 17, 2010 9:40 am

More flexible times now for the rest of the world ....

http://blog.findmypast.co.uk/
90 minutes free access to findmypast.co.uk at a time of your choice on the day that England play – when England play, you still don’t pay!*

How to get free access

Make sure you are registered on the website before midnight (UK time) on the day before the match. If you have already registered, you do not need to do this again.
Return to findmypast.co.uk at a time of your choosing between 9am (UK time) on the day of the match and 9am (UK time) the day afterwards.
Once you have signed in, you will have 90 minutes to search and view the records for free.

The free 90 minutes are available as a continuous period and will begin the moment you sign into findmypast.co.uk between the times stated above. If you’re not in the UK,

Our World Cup Widows offer for the second England match is now much more flexible, particularly for those of you based outside of the UK. You are now able to use the records at findmypast.co.uk at a time that suits you. We’ve been working hard to improve the speed of the site after the overwhelming popularity of our first offer so that even more customers will be able to benefit from it.

hope this helps some regards Lesley in Tasmania
PS thank goodness as I could not face 4am in Southern Tasmania in the middle of winter getting up

Thanks Lesley,

That makes up for the real time they failed to deliver a couple of days ago.

Does anyone know what happens with the three hours free access they promised us would be available on the day of the next England match?

“You can view all the records* on findmypast for free during every England World Cup match – all you need to do is register. 30 minutes before kick-off we'll stop charging for 3 hours, which should give you plenty of time to explore what we have to offer.”

Will that be available from 30 minutes before the start of the game as before?

They had better hurry up and let us know. Otherwise the only way of getting FMP out of their dilemma will be multiple registrations.
