I would like to have a look at the records of Bridgeton UF Church (I think it was in John Street). Can any of you Mitchell experts tell me if they would have the records?

Hi Muriel,

Some records from Bridgeton Free Church (presumably the same place as the UF church) are held in the National Archives of Scotland in General Register House, Edinburgh. They are under catalog number CH3/152, and according to the list I have, this archive contains baptismal records for 1888 to 1932. Unfortunately the NAS online index seems to be offline just now, so I cannot tell you if there are other ecords within CH3/152.

All the best,

#-o I should have realised that Bridgeton Free was probably the same as Bridgeton United Free - probably started as one & became the other - when I saw it on the NAS index. Well, as I'm in Edinburgh it's easier to go there than to go to Glasgow :!:

Thanks, Andrew

Hi Muriel,
But Glesga is a much nicer place.
However, I don't know if ye hiv seen the recent publicity oan the two cities jinin' the gither to promote ursels oan the global market.
So frae noo oan ye'll be gettin' nae snide remarks aboot Auld Reekie frae me.
Oan the Brig'ton Kirk

If memory serves the Free Church in Bridgeton was an “Extension” Kirk
I should know the first minister's name,( A weel kent dignatory, ma big cousin will do me in furr no mindin' who he was) but it is eluding my tiny brain at the moment.
I think the two congregations jined thegither in 1900.
And the Kirk was in John Street.
I have seen several bits of ephemera from the church at auction.

The Mitchell - Tomorrow Tues 16th

Post by Jack » Mon Jan 15, 2007 10:20 pm

Hi Karen,
I'll drop in tomorrow pm.
Most likely i'll be on Level 2 (Archives) or just up the stairs on Level 3 (Fam Hist).
And i'll be wearing a check shirt under a blue jumper that has squares on the front.
I'm not very fashion conscious....
Hope you can manage it - and i wouldn't be surprised if a few more from TS will be in too!

Hi Davie

I KNOW Glesca's a nice place - I lived ther masel' wance.

The minister's name I know from Bridgeton UF is Alexander Wilson. He seems to have been minister most the time my families were getting baptised & married. What I'm hoping to find is some reference to my great-great grandparents leaving to emigrate to the US - I'm fairly sure they were members there.

Muriel

PS. Are you the one with Sorbie connections??
