Hi Lynn,

Have you looked at the birth certificate for John, born 04 FEB 1856 Blythswood, Glasgow, Lanark? If he had only been born two months earlier, his parents' marriage details would be on the cert, but sometimes the early 1856 ones have it too... a possibility?

All the best,
Sarah

No record of marriage

Post by Spacot » Sun Dec 09, 2007 12:12 pm

Hi SarahND
Yes I have a copy of that certificate but it does not give a date or place of Marriage, I am at a loss with this one. It is the only missing link in the line, if I can prove the marriage I have the family traced back to 1590's, this is the only Brick wall in all that time, it is very frustrating

Hi Paddyscar
I am also researching John Kelly in Glasgow, it is a nightmare, My John had 4 children 1 Annie died at 2 weeks I get 20 odd matches with her every time, none for his parents which would help, however I also have had a lot of success with the site, again mainly with unusual surnames, but to be fair I have only done the unusual side of the family to any great degree so perhaps being unfair.,
My John Kelly came from Ireland, another big problem.

Hi Spacot

Welcome to talkingscot.

I replied to your thread on rootschat re your MacBeans in Alvie, with some MI information for you, and sent you a pm. Did you get the information? I too am related to the MacBeans from Alvie.

Regards

Ellen.

I haven't been on here for ages - so Hi to all and I hope you are well.

I noticed the posting on the "hot matches" on Genes Reunited and it was only 2 weeks ago I realised that the emails from Genes Reunited telling me about hot matches, were duplicated in my account whether I wanted them or not. Now - for several reasons I haven't done much family history for the past year, so when I went into GR I was horrified to find I had over 25 pages of hot matches - which as you all know mostly match up in name, but not place of birth. It has taken me 2 weeks to get rid of the dross and am now down to 7 pages (that was yesterday - probably up to 10 now!).

However, amongst that lot was someone with whom I have been corresponding, who turned out to be some sort of cousin. Maybe someone could help me with placing him in my family line?

His Aunt was married to my Uncle. Would he be a 2nd cousin?

My father's brother died when I was 5, so I obviously never knew him. I knew very little of him, or his wife. I only knew that in the war he served in the Merchant Navy on the Atlantic Convoys - I didn't even know who he married.

Now, through this contact I not only have a new family lead, but photos of my Uncle and Aunt I would never have seen and details of his death.

Only 2 days ago I received contact from yet another match, this time for the line on my mother's side, who has my Great-Great Grandfather in her tree.

Genes Reunited does give me a lot of work - but for me it has all been worth it.

Happy searching :D

Hello Helen,

I’m not much good at puzzles so I’ll give a very late-in-the-day opinion. If your Uncle is the brother of one of your parents and the only relationship your Aunt (his wife) has to you is by marriage then any relatives of the Aunt are not normally in any way related to you and would not really belong on your family tree except perhaps for her parents which would establish her identity. (But it’s your Tree so you can add anyone you like).

Each of you have a pair of common relatives i.e. your Uncle and his wife and that can come in very handy, but you’re not related.

Does that make sense or should I retire for the night?

All the best,
Alan

Thank you so much Alan - that makes things so much clearer for me.

I will just be content with adding it all to the family tree and keeping in touch with a really nice family about it all :D

I just wish someone would come through with a contact through my Reid family who, like my Berry family, go back to "Ireland" without a county on the census. So infuriating lol.

Sleep well
