National Archives

Post by Mo-anne » Thu Aug 30, 2007 10:01 am

Can anyone advice me ? I am trying to find records for the Episcopalian Church and the NAS site includes such records - but I cannot work out how to find them: I have spent ages trying to work out how to use their search engine: I've emailed them directly but only got standard info on their web site back.

Thanks Mo

It depends which church you are interested in - can you tell us which one it is?

Digital images of archives are not available through the NAS's catalogue, so it would mean a trip to Edinburgh (or the relevant repository if they're not held at the NAS) to view the records. You could also try the SCAN site - http://www.scan.org.uk to see if they come up elsewhere, and also the National Register of Archives done through the National Archives in Kew - http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk

Hi Mo-anne,

The NAS index is good if you know the name of the individual church. Without that it can be very difficult to find churches in an area. The NAS index is not detailed by parish, county or the like.

Most of the Scottish church records held outwith NAS have been copied for consulting in NAS (for on-screen viewing?). One day they should be online (in a few years time?).

All the best,

AndrewP

Thanks for these answers. To be frank, I don't know which churches I'm looking for : I'm trying to trace the birth of three individuals who do not appear in any OP.R records - according to info from censuses, one was born in Monimail c. 1848; another in Inveresk or Musselburgh in c. 1828 and the other in Hutton, Berwick c. 1824 The marriage apparently took in an Episcopalian church (as far as I can make out from the image from SP) I was hoping there might be something on line I could search - I've also tried Scotscan in vain on this one.
Something for the back burner till they are available on-line
Regards mo

You could try contacting the Episcopal Diocese in Edinburgh for information - they can be contacted at:

21a Grosvenor Crescent
Edinburgh
EH12 5EL
(+44) (0)131 5387033

They should be able to tell you about what churches were where, and hopefully where the records are!
