Hi there,
Am anticipating hopefully a trip to Scotland next April. I want to check out the genealogical resources at the Mitchell library. My great grandfather James Pennington and his brother, David, and Jame's brother in law Alfred Campbell, all gave their occupations (census, children's births and marriage reg.) as ironmongers in the 1890's. they all lived in Glasgow. Is there a chance they might be listed in a trade directory? I wonder if they worked together? There are so many different jobs that could be called ironmongers that I'm not sure what they did.
Do you need an appointment at the Mitchell and is there a fee?
thanks so much,
Melody

You may well be lucky with that one!My great grandfather James Pennington and his brother, David, and Jame's brother in law Alfred Campbell, all gave their occupations (census, children's births and marriage reg.) as ironmongers in the 1890's. they all lived in Glasgow. No appointment needed and no fee. It is a public librbary. The post office directories are on a shelf and you can help yourself to them. Jack will be able to elaborate, I'm sure - he knows the Mitchelll inside out. I'm only an occaisional visitor!Do you need an appointment at the Mitchell and is there a fee?
Best wishes

Re Trade Directories at the Mitchell
Hi Melody,
As Lesley says; no appointments, and completely free for anyone from anywhere.
Plenty of Glasgow PO Directories (by the 1970s the "Yellow Pages" had taken over).
For what's available go to -
http://www.glasgow.gov.uk/en/Residents/ ... tories.htm
The Trade sections are normally for manufacturers, shop owners etc.
So i hope your G-GF James had his own business.
Ironmongers may also be under Hardware?

This link is for the 1927 Directory - gives you an idea of the contents.
