Newspaper Archives, accident?

Post by ninatoo » Thu Dec 27, 2007 2:17 am

Hello all,

I have just found the following death for my tree and I wonder if anything was reported in the newspapers?

Hugh Cairney aged 9, died 17 September 1896 as a result of a fractured skull and haemorrhage or inflammation of the brain. The RCE states it was accidental, but no other detail, so I am envisaging some sort of report may have made the papers? It is a sad case as his parents had both died, his mother not even a month before.

I would appreciate any help!

Hi Nina,
You don't say where this happened... so I peeked at the 1891. Was it the Hugh in Glasgow, mother Mary?

All the best,
Sarah

Oops sorry Sarah, yes his mother was Mary and it was in Glasgow. The death was registered in Dennistoun but they mostly lived in Havannah Street Blackfriars.

Thanks :D
Just wanted to get that straight before someone with access to the newspaper archives comes along  Unfortunately, that's not me  But someone else is bound to look in later!
Cheers,
Sarah

Hi Nina,

The Glasgow Herald has been scanned etc. and may make mention of Hugh. Unfortunately the archive isn't currently available to the general public (unless you are with a UK Higher Education Institution or can visit the British Library) so you may have to wait until it is online for everyone else. The British Library website seems to hint that this might be in the pipeline http://www.bl.uk/collections/britishnew ... o1900.html

I did manage to take a peek myself at the archive in the St. Pancras buildings, and they are well worth a look when you get the opportunity. In the meantime, if I do chance to be back there myself I'll have a look for you, but don't hold your breath!

Cheers,

Scott

That was a very common occurence - the Royal Infirmary was in Dennistoun registration district, and took in people from all parts of Glasgow and beyond.

All the best,

Thanks scooter and Andrew. I can't get to Glasgow Scooter, I am in Australia, and it will be many years before I will be able to get there myself. I was wondering about the Scotsman...I know it is online, but subscription only, which I don't have.

Andrew, that hospital thing is a nuisance when you are looking for someone you KNOW lived their whole life somewhere, hehe!
