McDonalds

Post by Babshagan136 » Thu Feb 07, 2008 11:02 am

Hello
I have been trying to trace my scottish ancestors for a while now but as the information I have is very little and Scotlands People do not seem to have a facility for second names I wonder if anyone could point me in the right direction to take. All I know is that Hugh Alexander McDonald was born in Perth(not proved) c1827 to Alexander Sutherland McDonald C1782-1867 occupation Gentleman, both men moved to England.
Any help greatly appreciated
Thank you
Barbara

Hi Barbara,

Welcome to TalkingScot [talkingscot]

Where exactly have you looked for your McDonalds? A search on SP for the whole of Scotland from 1825 -1854 only brings up five Hugh McDonald's with a father's name of Alexander...did you look at any of them? I would be inclined to have a peek to see if there might be a clue to whittle it down.

When did they move to England? I take it you've searched for them on the censuses? If you give us a better idea of the searching you've already done, it might help in determining where to look next.

Regards,
Anne H

Hello
I have checked all my stuff and the definate info I have is as follows
Hugh
1871 census born 1833
1881 census born 1831
1891 Census born 1827 Perth
Married 1853 Staffordshire age 26 born 1827 no luck yet on other census returns
Alexander the only thing I have is his death certificate 17.4.1867 age 84.
I have tried the other census but without a middle name to go on the task is endless, have no idea when they moved to England will have another look at SP especially 1841census
