Post by AndrewP » Tue Apr 01, 2008 9:26 pm

GROS has announced new prices for visitors to New Register House. The one change that will affect most people is the all day search will drop from £17.00 to £10.00.

Details of the new charges from 28th April 2008 are given below:
  • Full or part day search pass £10
  • Quarterly search pass £440
  • Annual search pass £1250
  • Evening visit (8 to 20 persons) £200
  • Evening visit (21 to 40 persons) £250
See http://www.gro-scotland.gov.uk/files1/f ... harges.pdf for full information.

For comparison, the charges up to 25th April 2008 are:
  • Part day £10 (subject to availability after 13.00)
  • One day £17
  • One week £65 (5 consecutive days)
  • Four weeks £220
  • One quarter £500
  • One year £1500
  • Evening visit (8 to 20 persons) £160
All the best,

There's also going to be a free two hour search period if you don't want to do a whole day! :)

I had a guided tour of the new ScotlandsPeople Centre a month ago for an article in an upcoming family history magazine this month, which will give a new sneaky peak at the centre. It is going to be a VERY impressive establishment, though the opening has been delayed beyond April 28th, which was the original intended date, and hence why these charges apply from then, as they were fixed by statute.

Hi Chris,

As far as I know, the free two hour search period will not start until the ScotlandsPeople Centre is fully open - at whatever date beyond 28th April that is ready. My understanding is that the free searching will be done in a separate search room from the £10 paying customers, and that room is in part of the building that will not be ready by 28th April.

Can you confirm, or refute that? :?:

All the best,

Hi Andrew,

You may well be right. I've been given a new prospective opening for the centre, but have agreed not to disclose it until the article is published in the next couple of weeks, though once it is in print I will of course let everyone know (if it isn't announced before that!), as it will then be in the public domain. Certainly the free two hours was discussed as part of the new centre's hours, but I'm not sure if it dates from Apr 28th. The new pricing structure was fixed by statute, so I suppose it should apply from the 28th, but it may be impractical, as the free search is to be in a separate room as you say.

I guess we'll find out in just over three weeks! :) lol

Be good if they also drop the online costs as well .. not that I am complaining as its the BEST value anywhere
but if you could get more than 60 if you paid £12 and so on with a sliding scale it would be nice
