Helllo Everyone:
I know this is talking scots but I hoped that someone might have info on a Workhouse in England.
I am trying to find information on a James Devonshire born 1791 in Bethnal Green, England. He was on the 1861 Census aged 70 living at Bethnal Green Workhouse. I wonder if he would have had to put in a application for him to go into a Bethnal Green Workhouse, I would like to find out how to find a copy of that application that he would have made. On the 1851 Census he lived with his son James his daughter-in-law and grandchildren. What I'm trying to find out is why he would have gone into a Workhouse when he had a son he could have lived with. Would anyone be able to point me in the right directions on where I can find this information. It seems sad to me that this 70 year old man would have put himself into a Workhouse and that he didn't have any family to turn to.
Thank You
Donna

Hi Donna,
Did you notice that he was also in the workhouse in 1841? He must have had a lot of trouble making ends meet. I don't know much about possible archival collections that would give you the information you're looking for, but someone may come along soon who does.
In the meantime, have you looked at the following site with information on workhouses all over the UK? There is a page on Bethnal Green:

All the best,
Sarah

Hello Donna,
Hilary in this thread has been “trawling through all the Bethnal Green workhouse records” at the LMA http://genforum.genealogy.com/ferdinand ... es/11.html
The LMA appears to be the London Metropolitan Archives http://www.cityoflondon.gov.uk/Corporat ... -research/
I’m not sure how it works beyond that point but see how you go.
Looks like the LDS Church also has material available and that may be a better option for you if you live within reach of one of their Centres. On this page do the Keyword Search and put in keywords BETHNAL GREEN WORKHOUSE.

Hope this helps,
