Hi all,

Hope this finds you all well

I just sent an email to Strathclyde Police asking them for help in obtaining info on my grandfather. When my grampa arrived in Scotland from Lithuania he was marked as an illegal Alien and the police used to do regular checks on him right into the 1940's. So I thought I'd give the Police a try and see if they could tell me anything (not holding my breath) The local Blantyre Police Station said that they no longer had any info on site and that I should contact the Police archives or go online and apply for freedom of information act.

Has anyone else ever done this? And if so, did you have much joy?

Well I did apply to see old medical records of my grandfathers, and got to see what the uni had archived for him.

It's deffo worth and try, good luck.

Many of the archive records of the Police forces that made up Strathclyde are now held at the Mitchell Library in Glasgow.

You should also do a search on TS, because if I recall, there was a discussion about this a year or two ago - try the working lives section.

Police archives for this area are at the Mitchell.
I got my Grandfathers record from there. He died while in the police service in1913.
The record costs 10 pounds but is the complete record from probationary constable onwards, it includes the wages etc.

It also usually gives place of birth,parents names,previous occupation etc so even if they only served for a short time it is a very informative archive.It also be warned gives disciplinary details including drinking on duty,consorting with loose women,drinking in clubs where they are not members!borrowing money from fellow officers-all were considered disciplinary offences.
They also got bonuses for catching runaway horses,rescuing victims from burning buildings,who had fallen into the Clyde etc.
The ledgers make very interesting reading & I was privileged to be shown them by a lady I had helped with a search on her Father.
