Hi All,
Does anybody know why the IGI stopped at 1875?
I have so many rellies who married in the 70s and produced kids after the cut off date it would be really helpful if they went right up to 1900.

Why 1875??
Searching for Barclay Aberdeenshire, Stewart Edinburgh, Brown Edinburgh & Uphall, Finlayson E Lothian, Fairley & Renton E & W Lothian for starters!

Hi Paula
I think the idea was that since statutory registration was pretty much accepted and well on the way to recording everything in both Scotland and England by then, that there were other sources for the family historian for post-1875 info. e.g. nowdays Scotlands People covers that time period you are looking for.
As you know, folk were required by law to register all births, death and marriages in Scotland from 1855 onwards. Although registration was started in England in 1837, it was not considered that everyone was actually registering all events until about 1875-ish - thus the cut off date.
Best wishes
Lesley

Hi paula
If you are anywhere near an LDS Centre, the film for the Scottish Civil records says
Register pertains to index, 1855-1955, and certificates 1855-1875, 1881, and 1891. I've always assumed this was all they were allowed access to by the Scottish authorities - but I could be completely wrong in my assumption.
You can order the films from the LDS and get the index entries - otherwise, as Lesley says, it is available on SP. I find the advantage of the IGI for the civil records is that it gives the parent names for births to 1875 - very useful
