family trees

Post by old bat » Sat Aug 23, 2008 3:44 am

Hello, to one and all. As a newcomer, I have been reading the previous posts and I must say I have been quite happy with GR. I think I have at least a dozen trees that match me with 20 names or more. I have one brick wall though, and that is my gt/grandmother,Margaret Campbell, who was born 1856 in Duirinish, Skye. She married John Silver McDonald of Fetteresso in 1883 in Edinburgh, and after 5 children he committed suicide by hanging himself from the bedpost. Margaret was a Gaelic speaker, and as a result, she had to farm her children out to various relatives. In the 1901 census she is found as a housekeeper to a young family in Edinburgh. I have not been able to find her after that. Any ideas ?? There are over 300 Margaret McDonalds in SP marriage lists.
I am researching..Donald McDonald Yeats Alexander Rothnie Aberdein All of the Aberdeen/Kincardine areas

Hi Old bat
...and welcome to Talking Scot :D

Have you tried a search for her using both surnames. Giving the birth year and + or - 5 years, there are only 10 matches on SP, and there is only one Margaret Campbell/M*cDonald who dies in Edinburgh, in 1933 aged 75, on the assumption she stayed there after 1901...of course, she may have moved. And it may not be her, and you may already have checked that one.
