Just wondering if anybody purchases these magazines (they all seem to have a CD attached) and are they useful. In my local newsagency there are about four or five that are published in the United Kingdom, a couple published in the US and one published here in Australia. The overseas ones are quite expensive here - usually just under $20.
From my quick look through while at the shops they seem to concentrate mostly on English family history - does anyone know of one that is more Scotland orientated?

Hi Maz
Personally, I try only to buy magazines if :
1. They have something on the CD of use to me
2. They have a Scottish article of interest
3. I have a long train or bus journey ahead!
I try to stick to this, but sometimes I just need a "fix" and buy a magazine anyway. I think they can be very interesting for general background info, but as you mentioned, there is not a specialised Scottish publication, and that aspect always leaves me feeling a bit dissatisfied with my purchase, as I flick through muttering "not relevant" to most pages.
I'm sure if you have a substantial part of a family who were based in England, you would probably get far more value out of them. I live in hope that some day/some way there will be a magazine devoted to Scottish family history research, and personally, I'd like to see a regular Irish section in that publication!!
There is a regular Scots history and archaeology publication, which I buy occaisionally, http://www.historyscotland.com/
...but it does ot quite hit the "genealogical" spot, so I reckon there is probably a market out there for a Scots Family History magazine...it's a topic which has been discussed here a few times on TS.
Best wishes
Lesley

Hi Maz,
I asked this question a while back and believe it or not I was told there isn't enough interest in a Scotish publication. However that being said many of the UK magazines have Scotish articles or will tell you how to go about doing a similar search in Scotland. we have 2 posters that I know of who contribute Scots articles Chris Paton and David Webster.
Like Lesley I pick and choose among the 7 availlable Uk based genealogy mags depending on the articles. I admit I seem to have more of 1 particular magazine than any other but it would be a personal choice based upon what your interests are.
They are a great way to learn how its done and what is out there.
Happy Hunting,
HeatherH

Hi Maz,
Try your Local Library
While they don't have all the Magazines, there is usually something
on the shelf.
I find the Library a great resource for Genealogy searching.
Saves the dollars that you can then spend on Scotland's People and such.

As you say we have had this discussion before and the general opinion of those in the know is there isn't the demand. I find it curious though that there are seven publications mainly devoted to one tenth of the population and we can't have one to cover perhaps the 15-20 million plus people of Scottish and Irish descent.
