The Selkirk Settlers 1813

Post by DavidMK » Tue Oct 28, 2008 9:47 pm

In 1813 these settlers from Scotland and Ireland set sail to Hudson's Bay, headed for the Red River Settlement in what is now Winnipeg, a city now as big,or bigger than, Glasgow.Perhaps you will find some of your missing ancestors here.

A monument consisting of a family of four, was erected at Helmsdale to commemorate their departure, and now a similar monument has been built by the St Andrews society of Winnipeg (but cast in Scotland) to celebrate their arrival. This latest monument to the Selkirk settlers was, last month, officially inaugurated by Lord and Lady Selkirk after a parade' through the City,of Scots and Scots descendants, pipe bands and others interested in the original founders of our City.Numerous festivities surrounding the event were held, with copious consumption of Scotland's national drink and food by those so inclined. In short, a good time was had by all.

Hi David:

Thanks for posting this. The Selkirk Settlers were very high up on our list of significant groups in Ontario school history studies. Strong and hardy souls, they were!

It will be interesting to see if anyone from TS connects.

Frances

Thanks Frances, it is interesting you were taught about them in school, surprisingly, very little, if anything, about it was taught when I went to school in Glasgow. .I guess it was good news for Canada, but very sad news for Scotland, something we were not proud of! Enough said about that

I tried to upload a photo of our monument, but I don't know what happened to it. Perhaps someone will enlighten me.

Hi David,

No sign of the photo in the Gallery, approved or awaiting approval. Try uploading it again. Look out for any error messages, such as "file size to large".

All the best,
