CastleGarden.org--another free site

Post by speleobat2 » Mon Dec 01, 2008 2:04 am

Hi all,

Just had this site recommended to me. CastleGarden.org has the records for ships manifests for immigrants arrivals in New York from 1830-1892. It was the pre-Ellis Island site so these records are mostly too early for me, but there were a few Longmores and some Finns that looked interesting. Looks like these are transcriptions, not the original images, but there are dates and ships names which you could use together with other sites.

Marilyn, there are about 30 Mornings listed including two Matthews!

Hi Carol,

Thanks for posting that link, its a great FREE resource. Yes, one of the Matthew's listed is my gg gf arriving into New York on 8 May 1883 along with his two young sisters in law, Janet and Lett (Letitia) Dixon. The link is a picture of Castle Garden (with the Manhattan sky line in the background) taken in June of 2006, when a few members of TS met in New York.....

I'm also listing a notation from my family history about the day of Matthew's arrival. I looked up the front page of the New York Times for 8 May 1883 and there had been a violent storm that day.

Without looking and going by memory, I'm fairly sure the other Matthew is married to Mary and I've not been able to find a connection to my family yet.

The day before their arrival, the New York Times carried an article about a fast moving violent storm that passed through New York harbor. Was the Circassia anchored at Castle Island or did it stay safely off shore? Either way, Matthew and the girls surely felt the furry of the winds and experienced the torrential rains. Departing the ship the next day was certainly a relief, for many reasons.

The "Circassia" was built by Barrow Shipbuilding Co, Barrow in 1878 for the

Anchor Line. She was a 4,272 gross ton ship, length 399.7ft x beam 42 ft, one funnel,

three masts (rigged for sail), iron construction, single screw and a speed of 13 knots.

There was passenger accommodation for 200-1st, 100-2nd and 800-3rd class. She was the first North Atlantic liner to have refrigerated space for meat and could carry 400

tons. Launched on 19th March1878, she sailed from Glasgow on her maiden voyage to

Moville (N.Ireland) and New York on 1st June 1878. She started her last voyage on

12th Aug.1897 when she left Glasgow for Moville, New York and Glasgow and was then

laid up. In 1900 she was scrapped in Germany. The Anchor Line was owned by the Henderson Brothers of Glasgow, Scotland.

I forgot to mention that Lett (Letitia) is listed as Dickson and not Dixon.

Morning everyone!

Marilyn, thanks for posting the whole link. My brain was fuzzy from looking at the computer too long yesterday.

Lesley, I guessed that it was somewhere on TS but thought I'd point it out since it is a free site and we're all looking for those these days--especially with Christmas shopping straight ahead! Haven't started mine yet!
