McColl, Stewart and on

Post by skipscott » Mon Dec 15, 2008 12:04 am

 Hi I'm new to this list, I live in Australia, and have a LOT of Scottish ancestors. Most are McColls who come from Glencoe Appin. Some are Stewarts that come from Appin and Wigntown. They all came to Australia circa 1852 to the Gold Rush. I can track them basically from here, but not from Scotland. What is the number 1 easiest way to track people for example, the earliest McColl relative is John McColl born maybe around 1762 in Appin and his wife who we believe is also a McColl, Mary McColl born about the same time again we think. They had a son Angus Ban, who married a Catherine McLean (she's another brick wall, we have nothing on her), in about 1820, and after she died he bought his grown family to Australia on the Bombay. So I can track them from here, but how do I determine which Angus and John and Mary are mine? I'm very confused obviously and just don't know where to start. Any help or advice very very gratefully accepted. Kind Regards Skip.
You may as well do it now because you're a long time looking at the lid.

Hi Skip and a warm welcome to TalkingScot. [scotland-flag]

Best place for Scottish records is Scotland's People (Link at the top of this page).

If you haven't already done so, I would first start by checking all the McColls on the IGI and try to narrow down your searches.
http://www.familysearch.org/eng/Search/ ... _form=true There are several from Appin for you to check some have been submitted by members of the LDS so don't forget to check the pedigree files.

I'm sure others will be along to help you on your way to success.

Regards,
Anne H

Hi Skip and welcome!
I am assuming you have the names of Angus' parents from his death certificate in Australia? And his wife's name perhaps from his children's marriage and death certs? Since they didn't leave Scotland until 1852, have you tried to find them in the 1841 and 1851 censuses? If you know his occupation, it will help.

All the best,
Sarah

Sarah thanks, Angus' parents names were John and Mary McColl (we think she was born a McColl too), I don't know the men's occupations although out here Angus was a farmer. With names like Angus John and Mary (all of which we have in every generation), it'll be a bit confusing with the census, but I guess I'll have to give it a go if I want to know more about them. Thanks for the advice. Skp
