Question concerning The Mitchell

Hi all,

The other day I found by chance some great videos about The Mitchell and enjoyed looking through them as I have never been. One in particular I found really interesting from my own point of view:

The reason it intrigues me is that Dr Irene O'Brien shows a Baptismal Roll for Anderston and says that the records contained there are seperate from the IGI. I have family that were born in Anderston but do not appear in the IGI and this would seem to give a reason why as I am positve they were church goers and had registered births until 1830 then stopped.

I was wondering if anyone knew whether this roll would be indexed at all or whether it was a case of just having to browse through the volume.

They are great videos except that my poor old broadband connection couldn’t handle the pace and whenever there was a crucial word it stopped halfway through and I kept losing the plot. The dates in the register were 1830’s. Did she say what church it was? I thought she said it was a breakaway church from the C of S. Was it the Free Anderston Church?

Maybe it’s listed here (unless it’s one of the nonconformist records in the Glasgow City Archives they don’t have information on)

As the church Dr Irene O'Brien was talking about was a breakaway church it is not surprising that the records are not in the IGI; most breakaway churches do not turn up there, although some e.g. Limekilns Seceeders.

I have not seen the volume shown in the film clip, but I doubt there will be any kind of typed index - if there is one, it is more likley to be a hand written index in the book, but I suspect it would probably be a case of just browsing through the book itself.

Thanks for the replies.

She doesn't mention the name of the church but does say it is in Anderston. I never noticed the date as being 1830 but that is very interesting. The family I am looking at have the births of their children appear in the IGI between 1826-1830 and then there are 6 children thereafter who do not appear in the IGI. There is every chance they just didn't do it but also now I am thinking that they were attending one of the break away churches and that is why the births are not in the IGI and I might find more in this type of resource.

The videos are very good. I enjoyed watching all about the Poor Law records as I've never seen one before. It is amazing how much stuff can be found in those if you are lucky.

As for the Anderston baptisms I can't remember seeing an index for them in the databases. I'll have look next time I'm there.

Thanks, that would be great. Just if you are around that area at any time when you are on one of your jaunts there. The chances are that there is no index and with only a round idea of the birth year it would be too much of a trawl to go through the whole thing- especially when relying on the early census data for ages.

Thanks also for the image. They really are great those records. I'm sure everyone is very different but the one you transcribed for me a while back was fantastic and really opened up doors.

Hi Rab,

Had a look today and there is a pre 1855 index of baptisms by child's name and year of birth. I didn't ask what areas or churches it covers but you never know you may be lucky and find what you are looking for.
