Australia to UK 1860's

Post by Andrew C. » Thu Feb 12, 2009 2:41 pm

Does anyone know if there is a website which will give me passenger lists for ships sailing frm Australia (Melbourne I believe) some time between 1862 and 1870?

Hello Andrew,

For departures from Melbourne you could try Public Record Office Victoria “Index to Outward Passengers to Interstate, U.K. and Foreign Ports, 1852-1896”
http://www.access.prov.vic.gov.au/publi ... ide023.jsp

Hope they’re there,
Alan

Thanks for that got my hopes up there for a moment however to no avail.

My wife’s great grandmother was born in Melbourne in 1860 and her sister in 1862. By 1871 however they are both on the UK census at a boarding school. They are listed as born Melbourne – British Subjects. We had presumed they had been orphaned however we found a notebook of my wife’s Gran’s which has her grandmother’s birthday on it and that is after 1910. I tried both siblings names in the search however nothing came up apart from a 28 year old of the same name who sailed in 1869, which I thought could be the mother. I did another search on the same ship with people of the same surname and a male age 30 presumably the husband came up, only his initial noted however. I did a search of the 1881census on Family search for them in the same county, however no luck. I will try the 1871 census when I get home. If it is them is it possible the children where not listed or should they have been there? I have tried the Victoria BMD’s and can’t find them there either.

Hi Andrew

Folks are often only listed as Mr Mrs or with an initial. I'm not sure about babes - I know on some shipping lists, it simply says e.g. Mrs Smith and infant. I'm not sure if age is always included either. It seems when folks paid their own fare, no-one was too interested in the details.

You can use wildcard searching on the link, so spelling can be varied as well. It may be worth searching by surname only & manually checking. I think the search will return a maximum of 500 entries, so if you have a very common name you have to do multiple searches - limiting the number of years being searched at once.

Do you have a record of their births? I have a CD index I can check, if you want to post the names, or you can pay to check the index online. The birth indexes will give the parent names. You can also download certificate images - somewhat more expensive than SP - probably about 7 pounds per image.

This is the Vic BDM search/download links

Thanks for the offer. We did look for them in the Victoria BMD's however we didn't think we had a match. If you have the time and inclination to have another look they are Jane Taylor 1860 and Rose 1862 both born in Melbourne. Unfortunately a very common name. We do have Jane's marriage date and to whom so if need be we will just have to send off for the marriage certificate to find Jane's parents.

Hi Andrew

Apologies - I missed the comment where you said you had checked the BDMs & I cannot find them either. But then - I cannot find them in 1871??

Civil registration started 1853 in Victoria so it was becoming rare (especially in Melbourne) for children not to be registered by 1860. I thought it may be another Melbourne (If Australia wasn't mentioned) - but this almost fits for 1881

Rose Taylor aged 18 born Australia working as a dressmaker
Dwelling Sisters Of Charity Of St Vincent De Paul
Census Place Lower Bullingham, Hereford, England
RG11/2588 123/7
Jane Taylor 22 - in the same residence - working as a cook

If your marriage certificate is from England, it will only have a father's name :(

Yes Trish that is them. Jane is a pupil at the school in 1871 and her daughter is a pupil there forty years later in the 1911 census! Do not know where the parent(s) and Rose are in 1871 though. If I get the father's name off the wedding cert perhaps this will open some doors, although I have it in my head he has propbably died in Australia hence why the mother and daughter's came back to the UK. Neither Jane and Rose are to be found in 1891 however Rose would probably be married and I have a sneaky feeling (I have an over active immagination!) Jane has gone abroad (perhaps as a nun! there are some clues to this.), she doesn't get married until she is 36. Rose's name comes up on Genesreunited so I may contact the person who has entered that however I have never used Genesreunited before so I am a bit weary of that.

Thanks for the hepl anyway.
