I've recently completed transcribing the Ardrossan & Saltcoats Herald "Files" for the years 1899 through 1904.
What are the Herald Files?
They are a weekly compilation of happenings in North Ayrshire 100, 50 and 25 years ago as reported in the Ardrossan & Saltcoats Herald. The 100 years ago section has been transcribed to facilitate searching, but the whole thing is also in the form of a weekly image file.
You can search for your surname interests, or even the town you are interested in. If you strike it lucky perhaps you'll find more details from the original edition of the newspaper.
Search Examples:
Kilbirnie reveals 5 pages of results
Beith reveals 6 pages
Dalry reveals 8 pages
Search the Herald Files

Hi Hughie
I've only just discovered a family link to Stevenston, so have begun to appreciate the Herald Files and the work that has gone into transcribing them.
Thanks
Catriona

Hello
I enjoyed the article concerning the question of "providing means for the conveyance of obstreperous persons to the lock up" in 1899, and how the Chief Constable in Irvine had provided a barrow "for the conveyance of drunks and incapable persons"
Those were the days. Now they just want to frog march or drag us,..... I mean them, to the nearest cash point.
Thank you for all your work, I found several references to my own, Rvd George Morris of Dalry Trinity. There is even mention of his death.
A Mary Morris also features. She struck a match to light the gas at an office in Ardrossan Harbour. WHOOOMPH.
I love this stuff.
Thank's once again

Thanks Catriona and Malcolm for the positive feed-back. Makes transcribing the files all worth while. It should be borne in mind that the original publications that the files are compiled from are on film at Ardrossan Library - they could contain much more detail on the incidents reported.

Hello Camweh
I hope you are still watching this. I have uploaded an image showing some text about one of my people in Ayreshire. I hope it isn't too hard to find in the labyrinth of this site.
My question is. do you have any information which confirms that the article discussed actualy appeared in the newspaper.

Hi Malcolm,
Sorry for the delay. Articles from the Ardrossan & Saltcoats Herald Files are weekly compilations of what was reported in the original newspaper 100 years previous - those originals are all on film, so a copy of the full article should be be available.
Using the published date from the Herald File in question you might like to contact the library for a copy. Their email address is:
localhistory@north-ayrshire.gov.uk
Their holdings can be found at:

Hope this helps<
