Hi Derek
Not sure where you have looked already? There are passenger lists on both Ancestry and Find My Past and quite a few other ones mentioned here:
http://talkingscot.com/forum/viewtopic. ... ad16430365
If you can tell us where you've looked, and where you've NOT found anything then that saves us going over the same ground and so helps us to help you more effectively.
Best wishes
Lesley

Hello Derek,
Is your John Jess a Lighthouse Keeper?
From Wigtown Free Press 28th February, 1901
BIRTHS - JESS, Male - B30/12/1900 - At Park Farm, Palmerston, Otago, on the 30th Dec. the wife of John Jess, lighthouse keeper, Cape Campbell, Blenheim, N.Z. of a son.
http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/t ... 1186759474
If so, go to Archives New Zealand http://www.archway.archives.govt.nz/ and search for JESS KEEPER.
You should get 10 results the earliest being one for 1886 “William Seed, Secretary, Marine Department, Wellington - John Jess - appointed Assistant Keeper on probation at Moko Hinou in place of Keeper Meyer”
At least that means he arrived in NZ before then and maybe there’s more info in the Archives file presumably obtainable somehow.
Hope that’s useful,
Alan
