My Grandfather William John Blackley, 1862-1941, had a varied career, miner, Teacher of Dancing and somewhere in between, a publican.
He kept two pubs in Lanark, the Wallace Cave, Bloomgate (still there I believe) and the Coronation Bar, High Street (long gone). This must have been sometime between 1900 and 1935.
My query is does anyone know of any records available that might throw more light on his activities during this period.
Many thanks

Re: Wine & Spirit Merchants
Hello Castlehayes,
Maybe this is too early and probably Glasgow but in the Glasgow Herald, Wednesday, April 11, 1894, there’s an article headed Licensing Courts and in the Paisley section a brief mention of a William Blackley, 3 Allison Place, applying for the licensed grocer’s certificate for the shop at 4 Renfrew Street. The application was granted.
Any chance he’s yours?
Alan

Hi Alan
The things you manage to dig up over the Internet amaze me (and make me slightly green tinged too
). I try my hardest but somehow my searches never bring up the quality of information your's do
If you weren't so far away I'd call on you to do a seminar on 'How to conduct Searches' and be your most avid listener.
Thanks mate for contributing so much to so many on here.

Thanks Joette,
And Derek, I’m sorry but I can’t help you with this one as the Glasgow Herald is online only up to 1900. Have you any idea of the name of the Pub?
All the best,
Alan

Re: Wine & Spirit Merchants
Hello Derek,
My knowledge of Scottish geography is pretty hopeless but here are a few old references to a Railway Inn around about Beith.
Glasgow Herald, Thursday, March 6, 1873. A fellow by name of Dobbie got into trouble for firing at a Crow while crossing a field called Mossneuk which was situated immediately behind the Railway Inn, Beith.
Glasgow Herald, Friday, September 17, 1897. A notice of marriage of William Kirk and Margaret King at the Railway Inn, Glengarnock.
Glasgow Herald, Monday, August 17, 1846. A Supper and Presentation at the Railway Inn, Kilbirnie.
I was hoping to find something more recent in Parliamentary Papers that would show the licensee’s name but didn’t have any luck.
I can’t find a current Railway Inn that fits the picture. http://www.yell.com/ucs/UcsSearchAction ... &pageNum=3
On a Railway theme there’s a Station Inn at 3 Balgray Road, Barrmill, Beith.
All the best,
Alan
