Dunbarton DUNN

Hi,
i am researching the DUNN family and have come to a halt at 1861 in DUNBARTON / DUMBARTON where the Census of 1861 shows David Dunn 65- Mary nee MCKEE 68- son Wlilliam Dunn 17 ! I know that his son Arthur aged 20 married Sarah aged 16 in 1856 and his other son David aged 29 widower married Elizabeth aged 26 in 1859.David Dunn snr died in Dunbarton aged 76 in 1872, could anyone tell me the church cemetery he may have been buried in as he lived the latter days of his life at Dunbarton High Street are there any MI's available .I'am desperate to find what part of Ireland he originated from so i can further my family tree research.

Have you found the family on the 1851 and 1871 censuses? Some census enumerators included the county or town in Ireland (although their instructions told them just to write Ireland ). The 1841 census is less likely to answer your question - there was less detail on that one.

Hi there are/were a few cemeteries around the area at the time. I would try http://www.west-dunbarton.gov.uk ›to see if they have any info.
He's on his own in the 1871 Census & it's just Ireland again.
Frustrating I know I have had similar experiences & then struck gold when one of the children gave his Birthplace as Donegal in one of the Cenuses.

Do you know when the Dunns arrived in Scotland from Ireland? I'm not familiar with the information given in the birth and baptism registers for the Catholic churches, but those registers are available on SP now. If the Dunns were Catholic and either Arthur, David Jr. or William had a child baptized, maybe the register would show the father's place of birth too? Just a straw to grasp...

I noticed that Arthur's marriage to Sarah Campbell has been submitted to the IGI so someone else is tracing this family--unless that was you!

From memory which is shakie, I think the new cemetery opened about 1858. Before that the old cemetery was in the middle of the town. You could try the cemetery office in Clydebank, they are very helpful, the number is 0141 567 2310. The on-line Catholic records are patchy. Although the parish was opened in 1830 and all the records are available, for some reason you can't get them on-line yet. Catholic marriage records up until 1860 normally said what part of Ireland the couple came from, so you could be lucky.
