Dundee Courier (1844-1900) online for some.

Post by Currie » Mon May 03, 2010 3:15 am

After a long wait the Dundee Courier (1844-1900) has made it into my Library edition of 19th Century British Library Newspapers. Presumably this is the same edition as is available to UK Libraries and UK Educational Institutions.

It doesn’t appear to be yet included in the British Newspapers 1800-1900 site. http://newspapers.bl.uk/blcs/

A Welsh newspaper, Wrexham Weekly Advertiser, is another new one and there are probably some English newspapers as well. There’s nothing new for Ireland.

Great news,
Alan

LATER

These are the new ones. They are listed in the search under “19th Century British Library Newspapers, Part 2.” so that you can search the new stuff separately if desired.

Alan

Where are you accessing these newspapers? Are you going through the State Library of NSW?

Thanks

Hello Robert,

All Australian residents can access the 19th Century British Library Newspapers database from home via the National Library of Australia. http://www.nla.gov.au/app/eresources/li ... 0&start=60

Some States have separate access:

NSW: http://www2.sl.nsw.gov.au/databases/athome.cfm

VIC: http://www.slv.vic.gov.au/catalogues/in ... fsite.html

S.A.: http://www.slsa.sa.gov.au/site/page.cfm?u=441&c=23322

All the best,
Alan

Hi Alan

I have 2 (probably dumb) queries

1. Where do I go to get a list of what newspapers are included - I don't seem able to find same
2. I am specifically looking for newspapers from Perth (Scotland) as ancestry had a name index to BDMs including obits & my folks get quite a few mentions - the obits in particular I would love to find.

Hello Trish,

It’s all very strange. If I go to the State Library of NSW site the 19C search page has nothing below the “by publication title:” box, and there’s no sign of the extra newspapers.

But if I go to the 19C search page at the National Library of Australia site there’s a box below the “by publication title:” box where you can select Part 2 which contains all the new titles.

I’ve been checking the NSW site for some time waiting for Dundee to appear. Maybe NLA has had this for a while and maybe Libraries have to pay more to get Part 2? I’ve no idea really. I can’t remember which site I logged onto this morning. Unless the NSW one was there and later went?

Whichever site it was I got the list of new titles by selecting Part 2 and clicking on “Browse Publication Title” and noting down anything there.

Even more confused than usual,
Alan

LATER:

Part 1 and Part 2 title lists available here:

I arrived back to pick up the later which is now bookmarked. Sadly no Perth - but a few interesting titles in the first group - the 2nd lot seem more mundane - I rather like the idea of The Oddfellow, The penny Illustrated and the Poor Man's Guardian - the later only appearing for a few years which may indicate that poor men didn't buy newspapers - but I may have that all wrong.

I shall try approaching the library that owns the index cards scanned on Ancestry to see if they provide a look up service

many thanks for your continuing help, much appreciated

Trish

Hello Trish,

See the last post on this thread. Part 2 has to be purchased by libraries. This means the NSW one won’t be a lot of use for general searching unless they also purchase Part 2.

The National Library in Australia http://www.nla.gov.au/ can be joined by anyone in living in australia no matter what state you live in and accessed on line free you register and they send you a card in the mail with your number on to login to the licenced resources they have parts 1&11 of the 10th Century British Newspapers hosted by Gale

you will possibly find if you enter a name it will come up as many of the newspapers copied and possibly in the Caledonian Mercury other than that make up a hit list of names and take out a week on the Scotsman Archive http://archive.scotsman.com/ and rip though them you can search first free and see if you get many hits and then decide how much time you need

It says on your link that the NLA is intending to buy same - that is what I always use - although there are a couple of resources from the SLQ that overlap - I don't think I am allowed to join the NSW state library - unless being born there counts - tis many years since I lived there

thanks again

Trish

Hi Lesley - as mentioned I do have an NLA membership - just not sure if part II of the newspapers have arrived there yet. I'll check the Scotsman but I don't think it is what I am looking for - I want a few papers from Perth (Scotland, not WA) and I don't think they are online - but I live in hope.

Hello Trish

I have never enquired about the newspaper archive in Perth Library. Surely they would have one. I can phone and ask. What are your dates and names of possible obituaries?
