William Kings Death 1867, Findochity

Post by liz hutchison » Mon May 24, 2010 8:48 am

Hi can anyone tell me where else to look for William Kings birth and his parents.
On William Kings Death Rego from Scotland's People it states that:
William King
Occupation Tailor
Married to Margaret Menzies and Janet Brouster.
Died Dec 28th 1867 aged 100 years.
Which so far is right but this is what is thrown me a bit.
Parents James King Occupation "Weaver"
Mother Ann Bonnyman.
Informant of Death Helen King Daughter.
His father was Francis King and mother Elizabeth Bonnyman.
The only James King I have been able to find that matches him is a brother James King born 30 Nov 1770 Glass, Aberdeen, Scotland.
I can not find his Marriage to Margaret Menzies only the Births of their children. Children's Births start from abt 1822 with first born William.
If I had the Marriage Rego it would or could tell me more, I found his Marriage to Janet Brouster 26th Sept 1793 at Cabrach, Aberdeen. But no children found from that Marriage.
On Margaret King nee Menzies death Rego 1873.
States Margaret King widow of William King Tailor she is Illegitimate.
Died Dec 1873 aged 78 years.
Father John Menzies "Reputed Father" a Soldier.
No mother.
So how would I find her birth if there is no mother.
Informant Son in Law William Flett.
Could any one help me with this please as he was in at least his late 50's or early 60s when he and Margaret started having children his daughter might have had it just wrong on the day, Regards liz :-({|= ](*,)

I just love how William ages 20 years between censuses at Ancestry.

Is it this birth from the IGI that makes you sure William's parents were Francis and Elizabeth? It's certainly fits with William's place of birth on census records .

WILLIAM KING

Christening:
13 JUN 1768 Glass, Aberdeen, Scotland

Parents:
Father: FRANCIS KING
Family
Mother: ELIZABETH BONNYMAN

Have you looked at his OPR marriage to Janet Brouster to see if it gives his father's name?
It's certainly not unknown for a child to get the grandparents' names wrong.

Regards,
Annette

Thanks for your answer,Yes that is what me think who his parents are and on the LDs if you have a look at their new Pilot Program other children come with Elizabeth And Francis King nee Bonnyman
.
Have spent a lot of credits on S/P trying to find them the Ann Bonnyman'S I have found marry totally different people.
In the OPR it does not give parents name on M/R.Regards Liz :D

Hello Liz,

It’s always a good idea to check the state of the records in a particular parish. That way you get a better idea of the chances of a particular record ever having been properly recorded or having survived. Check the state of neighbouring parishes as well.

According to the 1840’s survey of the state of the Parochial Registers.
GLASS.—“The registers of baptism, &c., reach no farther back than to 1750, and have been very irregularly kept till lately.”
http://books.google.com.au/books?id=wUu ... 22&f=false

“Very irregularly kept” probably means as bad as it sounds.

SP’s list doesn’t provide for that level of ‘detail’ however you’ll see that there appear to be no Glass marriage registers between 1796 and 1838. http://www.scotlandspeoplehub.gov.uk/pd ... 8to249.pdf

You can get the IGI batch numbers for Glass from the Hugh Wallis site http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.anc ... #PageTitle

You can search the IGI using just the batch number and a Christian and/or surname. If you search IGI marriage batch M111994 for a common Christian name such as ‘James’ you’ll see that SP is about right with what it says about the gap.

Try searching the Glass batches for other Christian or surnames of interest in case a name has become mangled somehow. And remember that if the record isn’t there you won’t find it no matter how much time and money you spend.

All the best,
Alan
