Ancestry have just released a data base of Australian bdm index records. They have not given details of their sources (Complied from publically available sources) but say the data is all from State registry offices. Much of the data is already online - but some from SA, TAS and NT is not - plus it allows for a single search of all states which can be useful. Although it states births 1788-1922 not all data for all states for all dates is available (NSW has never published births post 1918 and has a 100 year rule for release of data). As with other countries, records before civil registration are patchy and the early years of civil registration also have folks missing. I think the only state that has released death information to 1985 is Victoria, records for other states will stop before that time.
This is the first time I have seen SA data online - although at the minute the only births they have available appear to be 1907 - 1922. The Northern Territory is also a new addition. They haven't mentioned the ACT so I assume that is not available (pre 1930 included with NSW). There is an online DB of deaths to 1970 for the ACT elsewhere.

Re: Australian bdm records
A bit late, but thanks for that Trish.
It seems to have been very useful already for some people.
For anyone without Ancestry access, or to double-check the Ancestry version, there’ll be links to the Australian State and Territory Registries that have some sort of index online in the Australian section sticky. But for anyone interested here they are:
Queensland; https://www.bdm.qld.gov.au/IndexSearch/BirIndexQry.m
New South Wales: http://www.bdm.nsw.gov.au/familyHistory ... ecords.htm
Australian Capital Territory: http://www.ors.act.gov.au/bdm/WebPages/bdm_deaths.html
Victoria: https://online.justice.vic.gov.au/CA257 ... ndexes~&3=~
Tasmania: None
South Australia: None
Western Australia: http://www.bdm.dotag.wa.gov.au/_apps/pi ... -5779-1388
Northern Territory: None
All the best,
Alan
