Much More Glasgow Herald Online, 1806 to 1990.
http://news.google.com/newspapers?nid=G ... 0&b_mode=2
Google News Archive now has the Glasgow Herald online from 1806 to 1990. This appears to be complete, around 300 issues, for many years, but for some years there are obviously missing issues. No doubt it’s still a work in progress.
The 19C British Library Newspaper Collection only has six years in the 1820’s before 1844, and of course nothing after 1900. I think the newspaper was published twice weekly in its early years.
Currently the number of issues online per decade is as follows:
1800s = 176
1810s = 701
1820s = 858
1830s = 496
1840s = 872
1850s = 1191
1860s = 2122
1870s = 2158
1880s = 2450
1890s = 2660
1900s = 2307
1910s = 2597
1920s = 2866
1930s = 2763
1940s = 2755
1950s = 2493
1960s = 1781
1970s = 2474
1980s = 2339
1990s = 38

On first impression the search doesn’t seem to be working anywhere near as well as it does in the 19C Newspapers although I’ve noticed it does brings up some things the 19C one doesn’t. All the new material appears to have been there maybe only a week or so and perhaps they’re still working on it. Maybe it has been scanned at a lower resolution than the 19C Newspapers and that is creating OCR difficulties.
Here’s something I’ve been trying to find for quite some time. It’s a full list of the newspapers in Google News Archive. Note the Glasgow Advertiser 1789 to 1801. http://news.google.com/newspapers

Thanks for that, Alan. I note there are quite a few Canadian newspapers from small localities. Also noted that there are some typos in the title links that might cause a search for a particular newspaper to come up blank. For example, "Le Grand Carrefour" of Rivière-du-Loup, Québec, is written "Le Grand Carrrfour" in the links (three 'r's in a row). A search for "Le Grand Carrefour" will not find this newspaper. You have to put in the spelling with three 'r's…
If you are not finding something, it's worthwhile to check the list and see how they have spelled it in the link!
All the best,
Sarah

Hi Alan
Thanks for that.
The second half of the 20thC decades variation is weird!
Up until recently the [Glasgow] Herald wasn't published on a Sunday. Then, up until around the 1980s/90s, deduct also public (bank) holidays, so that 300 might not be that far off the mark for a full year.
In the beginning, you're correct that The Glasgow Herald was a two days a week publication.
I'm unsure what the situation was during WWII. Newsprint was limited.

Hello Sarah,
I saw all those French names and wasn’t thinking French Canadian. They are probably from PaperofRecord that Google bought a while back. http://www.articlesnatch.com/blog/tag/c ... -wind-inc/
With all the Old World – New World duplication of place names it would be nice if they indicated the region against the name of the newspaper, and included a choice of region in the search.
All the best,
Alan

You can say that again! I was looking at some of the U.S. papers and so many states have towns and counties of the same names, that it's impossible to tell if the newspaper is relevant. For example, The Madison Courier: According to the Rootsweb Town/County search( http://resources.rootsweb.ancestry.com/ ... townco.cgi ) there are 31 towns named Madison, in different states and different counties. And the newspaper could also be named after the county-- there are Madison counties in quite a few of the states. One has to click on an image, zoom in to the title and hope the place of publication is mentioned. Very time-consuming!Currie wrote: With all the Old World – New World duplication of place names it would be nice if they indicated the region against the name of the newspaper, and included a choice of region in the search.
