costellos in coatbridge
Gday all,
I am trying to find out anything about the Costello family in Coatbridge.
The broader family lived in Whiflet, Old Monkland and Greenend.
They were a Catholic family (broadly speaking) and attended at St. Marys in Whiflet, or All Saints in Coatdyke
The Greenend Costello s, (or part of) i am told emigrated to Australia in the 1960's.
Any info would be gratefully received.

Hi Angus
And welcome to Talking Scot.
Not sure what date range you are interested in, but please bear in mind that on Talking Scot we don't post information about potentially living or recently deceased persons, so any information post-1960 would fall into this area. If you are hoping to trace the family backwards, then we can certainly help with that!
I'm seeing 316 occurances of the surname on the ScotlandsPeople site for the 1901 census, and quite a number of births, marriages and deaths for the post 1855 period. Perhaps you might find some useful information there.
Best wishes
Lesley

Gday Leslie
The Scottish peoples thingy to which you refer: is this available to overseas searchers? (I am in Australia)
The Coatbridge Costello's, to whom I am related, originally moved from Ireland to work in the shale mines in the Airdrie/ Coatbridge area, this was James Costello and his wife Roseana (phonetic) (nee Callaghan), or so I am informed.
I am also informed that they produced about 12 children, who it seems all lived, married and had children in the Whiflet area.
The one and only reference address I have, for these descendants, is (??) Clanrie (phonetic) or Clan Rye drive in Whiflet, but that was about the middle 1950's, so Lord Knows where they moved to from there, I did write to the Clanrye Drive address (by snail mail), however No response was forthcoming.
Unfortunately I am not the brightest bulb in the chandelier when it comes to the Internet (I am 80 years of age)so I have to try something every time I read about Scottish folks.
Thank for taking the time to respond
Cheers
Angus.

Hello Angus,
ScotlandsPeople’s front page is here http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/
Have a look at the Customer Information page http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/Conte ... ?r=551&390 You’ll see some green links in the panel on the right that will give you information about how the site works.
Immediately under those green links you’ll see ‘Getting Started’ Click on that and you’ll see information and more links about how to access the records held on the site.
It’s probably better to learn the ropes before you dive in. The site can be very good value but it’s not a good idea to be burning up credits running down blind alleys. If you feel such a situation developing, or you need help for any other reason, there are always people on this forum who will do their best to help if appropriate.
I like the bulb in the chandelier one. Here are a few more in case of an emergency. http://dan.hersam.com/lists/not_bright.html
All the best,
Alan

Re: costellos in coatbridge
Back again Angus.
On Genes Reunited there is listed a John Costello born about ten years before your good self, in Whifflet, Coatbridge. Someone there is trying to reunite their genes. http://www.genesreunited.com/
Here’s another Costello family with a link to Whifflet. On the home page you’ll see an email address that may still be current. http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/us ... -0056.html
There’s the Coatbridge Message Board with people trying to contact others. I don’t know how useful it would be. It looks pretty quiet. http://www.knowhere.co.uk/Coatbridge/No ... d/messages

I was feeling a bit off kilter today and now I know I was just #57 "Half a bubble off plumb." Useful phrases!Currie wrote: I like the bulb in the chandelier one. Here are a few more in case of an emergency. http://dan.hersam.com/lists/not_bright.html

Clanrye Drive still shows up on the current streetmaps of Coatbridge.

You got me going off at a tangent Angus but does anybody remember the cartoon strip which was in the Daily Record-Angus Ogg? He was a bit of a Heilland Andy Capp although he had a girlfriend(Morag?) rather than a long suffering wife?

Gday joette.
You are quite correct in the angus ogg character, he was the son and the dad was angus mor (that was a long long long time ago)
I am still searching for the Costello tree.
So far nothing has turned up but I will keep plugging away !

Okay Im going to mention this before someone else puts their oar in....Catherine 'Rena' Costello who you'll no doubt come across, married the notorious Fred West and was sadly killed by him, and her daughter Charmaine was killed by Rose West. Just a warning in case you stumble on it later. Rena had a relation named Brian - brother, cousin, I cant remember. Think the family had Irish roots as well.
