Paisley Emigration Society/Societies

Post by Alan SHARP » Fri Dec 31, 2010 4:03 am

Greetings from New Zealand.

Paisley Emigration Society/Societies

Does any one know of any more comprehensive studies of the Paisley Emigration Societies, than the rather fragmented published material, written from the perspective of Genealogical Researchers, with regard to the individual successful emigration sailings, like Inchinnan and Townhead, and other destinations in Australia, Canada and New Zealand.

There appears to be quite a bit of material with regard to the first sailing to New Zealand, of the SS Duchess of Argyle 9/6/1842 – 8/10/1842, and the SS Jane Gifford 18/6/1842 – 9/10/1842. Sailing from the Clyde ten days apart, but arriving at Auckland, New Zealand, and seeking pilots on the same tide, only for one to get caught on the edge of the channel and having to wait for the next full tide to free herself.

No big tugs in those days at Auckland, and only 30 new native reed and grass huts awaiting the arrival of 506 adults and 284 children. What Greenock Advertiser, and Glasgow Herald, extracts that I’ve seen, make for fascinating reading, but a comprehensive study, would put the Paisley exodus into a better perspective.

Thanks mb for the contact details.

It's a timely reminder that it's possibly two years since I trawled through their library web pages. A quick look now still has a reference to them preparing indexes for some of the hard bound content held, that I'm interested in. Will have to have an in depth look, as often the intro and info web pages, do not get refreshed as often as the actual content. Also some do not have comprehensive site search functions.

With our roots going back to Renfrewshire and Lanarkshire these two shires, are of most interest to our search.
