Selkirk Town Map 1823

Post by SandySandilands » Wed Feb 22, 2012 9:44 pm

This is probably widely known but I've only just discovered a map of Selkirk from 1823 online at Scotlands Places:

The map is very interesting and shows the name of the families living in the individual properties at the time. I've just discovered that my 4 x great grandfather literally married the girl next door

It also helped me to confirm that my 5 x great grandmother, Margaret Johnstone nee Turnbull is exactly who I thought she was on the 1841 Census as she is still living on the same street.

Hi Sandy,

Isn't it wonderful when you get confirmation from a new source such as this, and the map is so clear! I have seen one for Linlithgow before with all the residents and I'm certain that a good few of the families on the High Street are mine.

I've been on Scotland's Places many times but haven't really investigated the site fully, so thanks for bringing it to light again. :D

Regards,
Anne H

I never knew maps could be so exciting - no wonder hubby always insisted on doing the map reading before he got his sat nav

Oh maps are facinating things :D

Sat navs may get you from A to B but they don't tell you what you've passed!

And sometimes the B they take you too is NOT the one you actually wanted either.
They can take you to streets in Kilbarchan which don't actually exist :(
Give me a map anyday. Old ones are even more exciting as they can show you places which no longer exist :D

John Wood's maps are amazing - they can be found at the NLS http://maps.nls.uk/mapmakers/wood.html

Not all of them give names but fascinating all the same.

I had to firmly shut the PC down last night or I'd have spent hours wandering round those towns....

Fantastic Annette \:D/

Me too. Although I was aware of that series of maps, I had never taken a proper look at them.

All the best,

Andrew
