News from NAS

Post by DavidWW » Wed Nov 30, 2005 10:28 pm

Firstly the sasines are going to be digitised, - the Registers Archive Conversion (RAC) Project.

Secondly there’s going to be an on-line catalogue of Fatal Accident Inquiries for the period 1900 – 1977, - there’s already some material on-line.

Having another play with the NAS catalogue (http://www.dswebhosting.info/nas/ ) after David posted this, I discovered that there are catalogue entries for some WWI and WWII soldiers wills in class SC70. There are only about 30 entries (don't know if that's all there are or if that's all that has been uploaded so far...David?) but given that wills on SP stop at 1901 it might help some folk.

Pass ! - NAS are always at pain to emphasize that TNA at Kew is the place for military records. All that NAS hold are some pre-1707 militia records and some pre-1603 records of armies raised as and when required, as there was no standing army .........

Last time that I was at NAS, which was a couple of months ago, I saw these, or at least indexes to them there in the search room, if that's what its called (- the room that has all the references to all the indexes), so they do exist and I didn't remember seeing them there before. They were in a box as far as I remember and were on the immediate right as you go into that room, just along from where the post-1901 will & testament books are stored.

In the online catalogue it states:
RefNo SC70/8
Title Soldiers' wills
Date 1857-1966
Extent 32,932 items - so quite a lot of stuff, by the look of it!
Description Contents of the series
This series contains the wills of soldiers which were no longer needed when the Effects Branch of the War Office concluded its settlement of a soldiers' estate. All of the documents were passed to H.M. Commissary Office, Edinburgh, in terms of the Regimental Debts Acts, 1863 and 1893, and subsequently deposited in NAS.

There is more description on the web site....

If you go to http://www.dswebhosting.info/nas/
and in the search box put the surname of your soldier then in the ref no. box type SC70/8 you should be able to find a relevant list of names.
Best wishes
Lesley

Thanks for that Sheena and Leslie.

I found the will of one of my wartime casualties mentioned. From the details given on the NAS database, I got the exact cause and place of death, which weren't mentionned on the Wargraves sight.

There's currently an exhibition at NAS based on soldiers' wills.

Hi Bertha,

Bertha

The NAS page referenced by Andrew doesn't appear to say anything about direct printing to paper copies of digital images, as if the case next door at NRH for the BMDs of the same dates as are available on the ScotlandsPeople site.

As an increasing number of records become accessible via digital images at NAS on a computer monitor I'd have expected such a simple copying service to become available for a nominal sum, as the effort on the part of NAS staff is minimal.

Ask a supervisor when you're in at NAS!

In reply to the soldiers wills in NAS, all wills for WW2 are available to view in GRH they have all been digitised, copies can be printed off, for the usual fee in the search room.
WW1 how ever will be digitised on request, if you find the will you are looking for make a request, they are then digitised every Friday, so there-fore will be available to view the following week.
