Warning re Gambling Sites

Post by DavidWW » Sun Dec 18, 2005 10:49 am

Hi All

*** CAUTION *** *** CAUTION *** *** CAUTION ***

Y'day evening TS had a number of new members, 4 of whom turned out to be links to gambling sites.

The four new users deleted were stem71256, pipe88865, office30218 and ashlynn88313.

All had www links to the same www gambling site at at slots>online>casino>legaldotif9dotnet, with emails at net>searchdotorg. Both IP addresses have been added to the banned list, - 66dot98dot226dot51 and 64dot235dot247dot52, - even although it's near certain that both IP addresses have been falsified.

*** CAUTION *** *** CAUTION *** *** CAUTION ***

Do not seek to view the websites listed above. Andrew Paterson did and as soon as he got through to the website, his firewall showed a warning - his PC was being attacked by a trojan.

In other words please be very careful about clicking on www links for such new members, or clicking on www links in any associated posts.

The TSAG will do their best to remove such potentially problematic links as promptly as possible, but can't always guarantee that the removal will be immediate :!:

Tough call, but as an administrator of other computer systems myself, I would be leery of even mentioning the offending web-addresses without some modification, like changing the hyphen characters ('-') into a replacement set of characters, like "-hypen-" ... this helps prevent them from searching for themselves on the internet, and makes it more difficult for the innocent ones to accidentally click on a link. More difficult with the numeric IP addresses, but you might use "-dot-" instead of the '.'

I don't know how widespread it is, but I did read about one "gang" doing this sort of thing on public DGs, then googling themselves and bragging about their totals. (Don't recall where I read it though ... will try to dig it up.)

Hi David,

I've written a wee script that allows banning of IP addresses from even LOOKING at a site.

Unfortunately these morons sometime use Proxy addresses or rotate many IP addresses. My own guestbook was getting flooded with upwards of 40 obscene adverts per day, I've managed to control this a bit and am now down to about 5 a day.

If Andrew has PHPMyAdmin loaded I'll could sent him a copy of the script, unfortunately he'll probably have to wait until after Christmas since my PSU went PHuuut! last week and I don't have the time to replace it.
Searching for Keogh, Kelly, Fitzgerald, Riddell, Stewart, Wilson, McQuilkin, Lynch, Boyle, Cairney, Ross, King, McIlravey, McCurdy, Drennan and Woods (to name but a few).

Also looking for any information on Rathlin Island, County Antrim, Ireland.

Presumably the same reason why there's numpties out there who send totally meaningless spam. The level of such spam greatly increases during school holidays/vacations xmas:exclaim: xmas:roll:
