Regional Bias...

Post by darrenst » Wed Dec 28, 2005 2:35 am

Hi folks and runners of TS!

I'm sure this may have been asked before, but do we now have enough members to start Scottish regional forums?

There are a lot of posts on the general and other forums asking about stuff to do with the central belt. I really enjoy reading them, but feel a bit frustrated that I can't do much to help them with their queries. (I'm from Aberdeen).

I'm pretty sure there were regional forums on the old Scotland's People site before it shut down, and found and helped with loads of good stuff there.

If there was an Aberdeenshire and Banffshire forum, I might be able to go out and help. Like all in Aberdeen I have access to the local library, a short drive from many graveyards (give it a few months, it's winter!), and many small villages and farms that may appear on peoples certificates. I am also a member of the ANEFHS which has a load of resources for the amateur genealogist.

Just a wee thought.

Cheers,

Darren

Hello Darren
I will be sending you my list then  :D

Going on experience of other sites  i think its quite good this doesnt have seperate forums as people may only just look at the areas that concern them (i,d have no reason to go back and look on Bute or Sutherland). This way we can see all queries and names and places mentioned and may even find some of our lot where we least expected them to be :?:

not that im nosey you understand

Hullo Darren

Thank you for your generous offer. The Aberdeenshire side of my family has been neglected of late. Knowing there is some willing help available encourages me to have another look at that part of my research.

Hi Darren
I have used rootschat a lot and tend to agree with Tracey about homing in on your own areas at the expense of keeping a wider view. If you put the blinkers on its possible to miss links to other areas and keep looking in the same places. We thought we had pure Ayrshire till they moved to Kirkcudbrightshire then back again - and that was in the 1820s!
Only problem with a general site is you get hooked on everybody's interests. Like Tracey I'm just nosey!!!

Could we start a thread where folk post their willingness, like you, to do lookups and area specific searches? That would be just as good wouldn't it ?

Thats great intit? I'm happily volunteering other people when I'm not much use for any help other than more general things. Just wait till I retire!!! :D

Hi Darren

The TalkingScot Admin Group meet every month.

An agenda item in the meeting that took place earlier today was your interesting suggestion as above.

After some considerable discussion of your suggestion it was felt that Tracey's reaction rather neatly summed up the unanimous opinion of the AG ....

At the moment, TS has ca. 830 members, but who knows how the situation might have developed in a year or so's time !!

I have to say I'd vote to keep the site as it is at present.
Although I may not have a direct interest in some areas there always seems to be some tips and ideas that can be picked up.

Happy New Year to you all and Lang may your lum reek
I haven't spent a New Year in Scotland since 1962.
When it is 41 degrees here as it is today. I think of Hogmany at home

Hi there
I have just joined this site and have enjoyed reading all the banter between everyone.
There are fourms specificaly for regions which i find are a great help, but I also think it's good to widen our horizons as you never know where your rellies are going to turn up as I have found in the past.
Mine have taken me from Orkney,Sutherland,Caithness down to Edinburgh,Elgin,Carluke,England and further afield so it's good to have contacts all over.
Happy New Year to everyone.

Names: Mackay,Manson,Bain,Henderson,Hourston,Spence,Linklater,Drever,Louttit,Brown, Sinclair,Lyall,Revolta,Bews,Wood,Banks and loads more as I'm also doing my kids trees as well.
