info after 1905etc.

Post by patjohn » Fri Feb 03, 2006 11:15 am

If I go to Edinburgh, how do I trace the following

a birth after 1905.
a marriage after 1930
a death after 1955.

Can I copy the information? Does it cost me?

Thank you

Hello Patjohn,

I have never been to NRH but have used the digros system in Glasgow.

Assuming it is the same search method, then you search by year first and then name.
You can transcibe the information or order the certificate at a reduced cost of around £8.

Hope this helps and I'm sure there will be others along soon who know the system at Edinburgh well.

Regards,

Hi Patjohn,

Annette has pretty well covered it. Copies of certificates newer than the limits to ScotlandsPeople (the years that you have given) are £8 each. The terms and more are laid out on the following webpage.

http://www.gro-scotland.gov.uk/famrec/h ... flet3.html

The certificates available are up to 2003, or maybe 2004 now (they take time to be passed by the examiners and passed to NRH from the Registrars' offices). Sometimes the newest ones have not been microfiched or scanned, so you can request to see the book. You will also have access to RCEs which are not available online yet.

The best advice is to have a list of people that you are searching for and as much information as you can so that you can track them down efficiently and get the most from your day. Have your notepad and pencil(s) with you.

While work is being done on NRH, there is no "lunchroom" available, so you will have to go out if you want to eat or drink during the day. While the East Search Room is closed to facilitate joining NRH to the NAS building next door, search places have been made available in the library upstairs (the South Search Room). There is less elbow room there, but it is still well workable. More use is being made of the Dome as a search room too - in there you are up on high chairs (like sitting up at the bar :D ).

All the best,

Hi Patjohn

When I went to Edinburgh last year I found the staff extremely helpful. So don't be afraid to ask for help. I also took my laptop which was really useful as I could log more information in the short time I had. If you can do that, then you need to book a place in advance with a power point.

They do provide a small room where there is a coffee machine and you can eat anything you take in with you. I took my own sandwiches just to save time.

Happy hunting :D

Because of building alterations, this lunch room is currently closed !

Patjohn - if you don't want the certificate badly enough to pay £8, but still want the information, you'll have to write it out. I visited last week and the lady beside me had a pile of ready-printed forms, ready just to fill in the important bits. I realised later these are available somewhere downstairs but I guess you'd have to pay for them. Cheaper to draw up and print off your own and use them to save previous search time. Another advantage is you're less likely to miss an important bit of info in your haste.

I was terrified but needn't have been - it's so well organised, and staff extremely helpful.

Enjoy your visit.

Hi Patjohn

I was there on Friday and had phoned the previous day to make sure they had plenty space available (which they did have) but when I arrived for my half day at one o'clock there was an queue of about twenty people. If you want to go on a Friday I would recommend booking a place, which you can only do if you're going for the full day. The staff in the office said it was the busiest day for a LONG time and that Fridays are particularly popular. Having said that, there were still spaces available but I was filled with horror at the potential disappointment!

Have fun - the time will fly by! Very good coffee at the Cafe Royal :D
