Has anyone completed their research?

Post by Cathy » Fri Feb 10, 2006 10:25 pm

Hi All,
I told myself I would be finishing my searches circa December 2004.
HA!
Anyway, here I still am.
Has anyone finished, or when do you decide to give up on a particular branch?

When you find that you are trying to find the parentage of Adam and Eve.

All the best,

Hi Cathy
Finish? You are never finished! (Well, Not if you don't want to be...)

When asked in a jokey way once "Have you finished then?", I found myself replying "It will be finished when I join them!"

...and even then it will go on.

Best wishes
Lesley

Hi Cathy

I dont EVER expect to complete my research  :!: but then i did start late 40 or 39 cant remember but it feels like a life time already -now almost 43 !!
I have decided now to sort of take a longish break from actively looking to catch up with what i know or have found and to try and undertand all that goes with it. I will of course still ask questions :!: I have got to the point where a lot of foot work will be involved and as i live in England it isnt possible.
I have been extreemly lucky compared to some with the contacts i have made re FHS and local studies and the good people on TS notably Angel who provided me with records which named kin not found on SP at all and still cant.
At first i chased every branch but now have become realistic financially about doing this !
In a few years i have gathered a huge amount and its all in place but i feel i have to stop and take stock of what i have as hopefully i have the rest of my life to find the missing ones (or make an effort and go to TNA !) and tick of all the things on my "to do" list" which doesnt get shorter  .
What i dont complete the next generation can and pay for !
Scotland - Donaldson / Moggach / Shaw / Geddes / Sim / Gray / Mackie / Richards / Joel / Coull / Mckimmie / Panton / McGregor
Ireland and Scotland - Casey / McDade / Phillips / McCandle / Dinely / Comaskey + various spellings

Hi Andrew,
I was thinking more along the lines of "I've traced them back to Ireland",
and we all know how notoriously difficult it gets from there, so I'll stop at that?

Hi Lesley,
I keep losing my to do lists under my rain forest of papers.

I do not belive we ever finish. Once I said I wanted to find all my gggrandparents. Then it was I want to go as far back as I can. Now it is I want to know more details about their lives such as a map of their land or history of their village. I seem to keep setting another goal. I would have way too much free time if I said it was done! :) Kristin

Sometimes its good to move onto another branch for a bit - you can always come back to the more difficult areas when you feel like more of a challenge!

For me, like Kristin - quality not quantity is my motto !
One thing that i cant bear is on certain web sites that have submitted family trees is those tree's that have 2 million 570 names attached :!: slight exagertation but you know the ones i mean and i think how can they possibly be attached to what they have found as surely only the first few hundred names are "immediate" the rest are just statisics and for me thats not what its about - its about in a way "finding me "

Hi Lesley

I have come back to my Irish branch any number of times but when I have a very common name and a different location on the immigration record, the marriage certificate and the children's birth certificates - not to mention "Ireland" on the death certificate - I think I have stopped :? :?

I've come across these trees! :!: I think I've found most of my immediate family and have been branching out and like others trying to put some "padding" into the tree so they are not just names and dates.
I'm also finding that a lot of the time I seem to spend just searching different sites, not for anything in particular, and joining forums :!: Also from a financial point of view I've had to cut back a bit but also as I've gained more experience I find I'm a bit more careful with my credit card.
I also enjoy helping other folk if I can so get sidetracked from my own research.
