Has anyone used this site?

http://www.bmdindex.co.uk/

I'm stuck looking for English BMD wondering how this site compares?
They are advertising membership at a reasonable price - even considering the rate of exchange.

Would be interested in your comments.

Hi Donna
I did use it, but over a year ago, so I can't really remember much about it. I did however, decide that for me, 1837online seemed to work better at the time. But maybe thats just 'cos I'd got used to using 1837online for BMDs & I don't think the offer was as tempting as it seems to be now - but see below..... It seems to have been rated highly by a well known monthly FH magazine too.

Do report back if you decide to go for it and let us know how you get on & whether it was good value etc.
NB - Minimum Term for sign up is 12 months
£5 for 50 credits per month
Access to all included databases on an ongoing basis, with secure automatic monthly payments by credit card.
Unused credits can be carried over to the following month. Extra credits can be purchased if required.
Looks like given the minimum term it would only pay off if you had a lot of English relatives. Other wise I'd go for the pay-as-you-go option I think.
Best wishes
Lesley

Thanks Lesley - I've used the 1837 site - again a while ago. Guess I'm looking for something as easy as Scotlands People LOL. Not that the Scots are easy

English records

Post by Paula » Mon May 22, 2006 7:09 pm

Hi Donna,

Just joined TalkingScot, after spending years researching my english lines and now starting my husband's scottish roots.
Have been browsing and saw your post. You don't say whether it's just post 1837 you are looking for, but if you are searching earlier Parish records in North West England there is a very good free Parish Clerks Project for Lancashire - www.lan-opc.org.uk which you may find useful.
There is also Free BMD www.freebmd.rootsweb.com which is useful to narrow down searches before you start paying on the 1837 site

Hi Donna,
I tried out the pay-as-you-go on that site a few months ago and was very disappointed. My memory is that the search possibilities were quite limited and so gave w-a-y too many results. Each result was a series of pages on which you "might" find the person you are looking for (i.e. that contained someone with the surname in question)-- but you had to pay with credits to see each page and find out. In the end it is only an index, not the full record, so you can't even be sure.

Unless you have a pretty precise idea of exactly when someone was born, married and died, you will waste all your credits very quickly (at least I did-- maybe I have missed some clever trick?). The only way I can imagine using it without bringing on hypertension is to subscribe to one of the "credit free" options, so you can freely search without worrying about peeking into another page to check something... But this would only make sense if you have a lot of research to do.

I hope someone knows better and will say that I am mistaken-- all those positive reviews just don't fit in with my experience.

Sarah

I got frustraited with the site - and went to the trouble or purchasing a marriage certificate only to find the mothers of the bride and groom weren't listed.

Such is life.
