Names being researched .....

Post by Kathy » Fri Jun 30, 2006 2:07 pm

As members of TS, we are mostly researching in Scotland, is it possible to have a spot within TS to record research names and places, so that members can at a glance, check if there are any other members researching the same names.

I know we can include the names at the bottom of any posts for other members to see, but not all members post.

Perhaps this has previously been discussed and I have just missed the discussion.

Hi Kathy

Like you I'm not sure if this might already have been discussed. I think it would be a great idea - at the moment I use the search button at the top of the page and put in names from time to time, to see if anything related comes up.

Something simple like...

MacDonald, Tradeston Glasgow 1800-1854 (for example)

which we could scroll through would be great, I think.

McDonald or MacDonald (some couldn't make up their mind!), Bonner, Crichton, McKillop, Campbell, Cameron, Gitrig (+other spellings), Clark, Sloan, Stewart, McCutcheon, Ireland (the surname)

Thanks folks for the suggestions. :D As we look for ways to improve and reorganize the TS site these and other ideas will be explored. In the meantime don't forget that the easiest way to search the entire site for a name or place or phrase or all posts by a specific TS member etc etc is to utilize the search feature as Liz described.

Best wishes

Anything we do decide to do has to be simple, I think, and have prescribed format so that all entries are the same. Perhaps a standard type of on-line form to fill in with basic details?? and a link from the top of the page?? Perhaps a trial run/pilot to see how it might work :?:

We'd need to keep it clear and easy to fill-in so that everyone can use - also not to give more work to the folks that buzz away behind the scenes keeping the rest of us up and running.

Isn't it great the way us users keep coming up with ideas to keep the admin folks busy??!!

I have to admit, I had not noticed the search button.

Don't feel too bad about that! I only saw it after I'd been registered on TS for about 3 months!!

Kathy, from your 'signature' at bottom of message, I see Craig and Orr. From where please?
Thanks,

Hi James,

Craig --- Place of birth for my earliest was Kilbarchan, next generation Johnstone, then its a mixture of Paisley, Kilbarchan & Greenock.

Orr -- Ireland & Port Glasgow.

If you think there are any connections, I have quite a lot on the Craig line in particular.

Hi Kathy,

Ever hopeful are we who do this stuff. I saw Craig and Orr, and hoped, but "Craig --- Place of birth for my earliest was Kilbarchan, next generation Johnstone, then its a mixture of Paisley, Kilbarchan & Greenock.

Orr -- Ireland & Port Glasgow."

And I wanted Kilbirnie/Dalry. Never mind, maybe 'tomorrow'? lol
Thanks,
James.
