Hi,
I have a reference that someone was at the Old Magazine, Glasgow abt. 1858.
He was also listed as having been in India with the East India Company abt. 1859. I am presuming that this person was a soldier.
Would there be any records of the personnel who were at the Old Magazine, or of joining the East India Company.
A suggestion on where to look would be really appreciated.
Kind regards,
Pat Bostock.

Old Magazine, Glasgow & East India Co.
Hi,
Thanks for the websites - I have researched in India, because my forebear was James Ferguson Cargin who left Scotland in 1850 after having joined the East India Company's Army. He married there & I have his information.
This research is for Robert Cargin, born in Co. Down, Ireland - he applied for Poor Relief in 1864 & it was his first application. On the form he is listed as Single & his Occupation was Ostler. He is 51. His parents are deceased.
The form lists:
In present house 14 days.
Prior in Hamilton. 4 mths.
Prior in Wishaw, Camburnithew?? 2 mths.
Prior Old Magazine, Glasgow. 6 mths.
Prior: East India Company's Service. 5 years.
Various parts of Glasgow & Barony. 4 or 5 years.
As Robert didn't marry, that cuts down a lot of research & I was hoping that the Old Magazine, Glasgow might give me a clue. Does anyone know about the Old Magazine?
Thanks to everyone for all the advice and help.
Kind regards,
Pat Bostock.

The old magazine was most probably somewhere close to the old barracks in the Gallowgate, - see http://www.theglasgowstory.com/image.php?inum=TGSA01035 .
See http://www.bl.uk/collections/iorgenrl.html for HEIC records.

Hi Pat
Just noticed that your John Cargin was in Wishaw, parish of Cambusnethan, Lanarkshire for 2 months.
Your Cargins are an elusive lot

Old Magazine (Cargins)
Hi Russell,
Thank you so much for the information regarding John Cargin. Can I ask where this was found?
I am making valiant efforts to learn about Scotland. Today I borrowed "Scotland's Story" by Tom Steel, from the Library & am just up to the Romans in Scotland (which is only pg. 20 of 344).
Thank you all so much for your patience and help.
Kindest regards,
Pat Bostock.

Hello Pat
We were working on some of my relatives and had not realised that Wishaw was part of the Cambusnethan parish at that time. Wishaw is now the larger town and Cambusnethan has been overrun by modern development.
