How Much Data?

Post by Pandabean » Thu Aug 31, 2006 1:52 pm

How much data do you all tend to collect per individual?

For my great great grandfather Alexander McDonald. I have info on where he lived and compiled a small spreadsheet of addresses and a map. I also have narrowed down dates of what he did for work and where?

Have to admit, it is accumulating a bit

Although I've not organised most of it, there are Post-its on most of my SP printouts with snippets of info with, like you, occupations and addresses in different censuses and certificates.

I should really make a more permanent record (Post-its do have a habit of dropping off  ).

How much data? I would say, as much as possible. Though I've worked harder at looking for information for certain ancestors than for others.

My Legacy program has a Notes section, into which I put every little snippet that I learn about an individual, work, work addresses, witness at a wedding, house moves, what he owed the pawnbroker. Interesting to have it all in one place.

Best wishes

It's as much info as possible for me too per individual. The trouble is I never find enough information. Mainly I just have what is found in the censuses and BMDs. Like yourself I get something of the area they lived. I use google earth if the place still exists and as most of my ancestors were from Glasgow there are usually images online of the streets they lived in.

It would be nice to create more of a complete picture for each inidivual. I'd like to find out about the workplace, etc. but I think that's not going to be easy.

I add as much info as I can find on each individual. When I was home last year I visited the Isle of Islay and was able to take photos of the actual houses and farms where my ancestors lived. Also took photos of the gravesites. I include the photos in my Family Tree Maker program.

So far I am trying to expand on some people. Such as one of my Great Great Grandfathers who was a police constable. I have found the Mitchell has copies of the police service records and I will hopefully have one soon.

I also was thinking last night if I could find information on a shop that one of my other ancestors owned. Is there any sources for that kind of information?

I add as much as I can too. I also use Legacy, so it makes it easy. Today I added the following note to my tree:

"From Annie's grand-daughter (Who I have just today made contact with): "Annie Carson was a very tiny blond, ( 4'-11", size 3 shoe American 3), with blue eyes and beautiful tiny hands. She had long fingers with beautiful nails, and she had a great sense of humor, always laughing and telling jokes." "

What a detail...I love it! And now I know where I get my own lack of height from!
