Found something interesting in my search for my Macrae family in FREE CEN. Mary McLennan, with five Mcrae children, one of whom could very wll be my gg grandmother Margaret Macrae age 7 of whom I have been searching for years. I now know (thanks to Jack) where she was age 17 in 1851 and now wonder where Mary McLennan was in 1851 and if any of the other children were with her then.
Will the 1841 census on SP have any futher information about Mary McLennan other than she was a Labourer in FREE CEN?

Hi Lizzie
I have used FreeCEN quite a bit and been able to compare it with the original filming in several parishes. So far it has been remarkably accurate and has virtually the same information as you would get from the SP images. Quite often there is no address given but this reflects the original entry.
One benefit is that it is much easier to read than the original
Did you trawl other entries on FreeCEN to see if other relatives stayed nearby ? If you can identify 'The Big House' or a large farm in the area where a Labourer or farm servant might have been employed you might find older children working there.
Its all a bit of a lottery whether you track down someone that way or turn up a tiny clue some other way. Following the progress of the other children often makes a contribution to the store of knowledge about a family especially when they act as witnesses for each other at weddings.
With names like McRae and McLennan there are so many spelling variations that finding needles in haystacks becomes an easy task in comparison.
I'll not cross my fingers 'cos then I can't type but good luck searching anyway

Hi Lizzie,
The freecen transcriptions of the census are exactly as recorded at the time of the census.
1851 gives a little more information than 1841.
As a volunteer transcriber for 1851 & currently working on 1861, I can assure you the records on freecen are strictly transcribed, and checked prior to there release on the website.

Thank you Russell and Kathy
I Have tried to figure the relationship between Mary McLennan and these children if any. Searched each child separately on IGI for common parents and found nothing so far.
My only hope is the 1851 census which I tried on SP but there are so many Mary McLennans and the cost would be way too much.

MacRae Family
Hi Lizzie
There is a post on the Macrae clan websit from someone in Canada looking for a Ann McLennan who was married to a Duncan Macrae c 1852-might be worth a look.
Also looking for my husband's MacRae family who were all born/brought up on the Black Isle . Duncan Macrae and Margaret Morrison had at least 13 children from 1870-1893. Don't know if there is any connection with your MacRae's ? Duncan's parents were Donald/David MacRae and Sarah McPherson, have no knowledge of Sarah's parents :

Hi Lizzie
The reason I asked about the parish was to find out if the 1851 was near completion on Freecen.
It has been transcribed, but is awaiting checking and validation.
You can keep an eye on how it is progressing by clicking on the following link.
