Hi SuzyQ:

The IGI has been created from records entered by family historians, LDS members and transcribers. Someone would have had to enter your family member's records into the database when they were transcribing church or government registries, or from their own family trees and other records.

Scotlandspeople http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk is where you will find direct access to Scottish births, deaths, marriages, census and wills. There is a 100 year lapse in accessing the online birth records so no one born after 1905 is shown. For the same reasons of privacy, deaths can only be searched until 1955 and marriages only until 1901. You can do free searches, but it is pay-per-view to look at the actual records.

They also show an example of each type of record, so that you can get a feel of what a birth, marriage, death and census will provide.

You won't be able to find the record of your father's 1912 birth on Scotlandspeople, but you'll most likely be able to locate his parent's wedding registration.

Everyone here is good at helping out, so if you post what you know about their marriage on this site - gfather's name, gmother's name, place, year, anything that you have, someone will likely be able to give you a start in the right direction.

Hi Frances....I've goten some info but when I tried to look it up on IGI it didn't match...exactly and I didn't find what hte other people said they found. I know Hugh Ronald m. Agnes Murray Reid in 1907 Abbotsford place Glasgow and I am trying to find what came before them. SOmeone else found Sarah Halliday as a gr.daughter of a John Ronald but what I saw showed her as his wife. As far as I was told he was married to a woman named Barbara c. 1880....I'm just clueless and not really sure how to do any of this

Hi Suzy Q,

The IGI covers up to 1875 for entries from the Scottish records, so your newer ones than that will not show up there.

All the best,

Go to www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk , register if you haven't done so already, and look up the marriage for Hugh RONALD and Agnes Murray REID. This will give you the parents of both groom and bride.

Then look up the marriage for Hugh's parents, - that's there waiting for you to find and that shows the names of Hugh's grandparents. On the RONALD side it's easy then to find the death records for these grandparents, taking you back to the greatgrandparents on this line, - and these include an 1855 death register entry with all the extra info that was recorded in just that year.

Be careful, however, as there's a couple of remarriages involved along the way.

The other side could be a bit more of a problem, as a very common surname is involved (watch out as well for spelling variations).

This doesn't mean that you should ignore birth register entries, - you should look those up as well just to confirm fully the links. SKS will be able to provide the 1881 census entry for the RONALD side, - it shows 2 elder siblings of Hugh's. Similarly, you should also check in other censuses.

Hi Suzy
They accept debit cards as well:
credit or debit card and most major cards are accepted including Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Visa Debit, Switch, Solo, Delta and JCB
Unfortuntely we all have to pay for the information that Scotlands People holds, :( but in most cases it is well worth it, :D , the Scottish records being more detailed than the records of many other countries.

You could contact GROS directly to order a copy of the marriage certificate, but this would be a more expensive way of going about it:
http://www.gro-scotland.gov.uk/famrec/h ... flet2.html
....and you would, it seems, still need a credit or debit card, unless you apply by post by post when they will accept a Sterling cheque or a British postal order.

Best wishes
Lesley
