I believe I have exhausted all possible research that I can do on my own, including the internet and LDS Church.
There is still way too many records out there today that have not been copied to film or microfiche even.
I think I am at the point I have to take my research to the next step and hire someone in Scotland to research for me. But where do you start with that. That can be more than overwhelming to try and narrow down someone who can do a quality job at a reasonable price.
I really trust the opinion of this website and the fine folks that run it.
Would you have any suggestions on someone I could contact for research on the BAILLIE name in the Highland area specifically. I'ts possible that Inverness-shire might be a location but that is all I have for location and time, around the mid to late 1700's. I need to start with the basics birth and marriage records.
Any suggestions or recommendations on a name of a good researcher you could forward to me in the area that I could contact?
Thanks,
Dave

Sounds good guys . . . I'll give it a try.
I have alot of strikes against me from the beginning unfortunately. I know of two brothers that were born in 1799 and 1800. I know there mother's first name and married name only. I'm about 80% sure of father's name.
It only gets worse from there. I do not know of a church, but they were devoted Presbyterian here in the States and we are very sure they brought that with them from Scotland. I do not know of a church or county. The only region I know to search is "The Highlands". Pretty broad area.
I don't know exact birth dates but without knowin mother's maiden name, I am very restricted on my searches
I can list here all information I have it would help or if you might know someone specializing in any of these areas that you might be able to forward the info to.
There were three Baillie brothers (parents unknown) from the Highlands;
William brn. Scotland ? died ?
John brn. Scotland ? died U.S. Ohio ?
George brn. Scotland 1771 died U.S. Ohio April 06, 1846
Willaim Baillie married Margaret (unknown maiden name) on a unknown date in an unknown location. They had two children (that I know of).
Margaret brn Scotland 1769 died U.S. Ohio June 27, 1846
Alexander brn Scotland 1799 died U.S. Ohio March 7, 1878
Daniel brn Scotland 1800 died U.S. Ohio April 20, 1868
Unfortunately this is all I know. John and his wife (possibly Nancy or Ann) went to US around 1804.
Margaret and her two young boys went to the US without her husband (reason unknown) around 1807 or 1808. Margaret's brother-in-law George also travelled with her to the US.
I would love to locate a church by marriage records or birth records. I just need that first bit of solid information to locate a city or church and I will be off and running. Many missing key components that makes this puzzle really difficult. If anyone can help me solve this one you will be able to hear me shouting and celebrating clear across the Atlantic . . . I promise.
Eternally grateful for any help,
Dave

I have found that a search of the IGI on a particular surname can show where there are concentrations of a specific surname, which can be helpful in tracking down an area to search, also have you tried this link:
http://www.spatial-literacy.org/UCLnames/Surnames.aspx
It gives distribution maps of GB for a particular surname in 1881.
hope this helps a bit.

Hiya,
I did a look up on Scotlands People on births from 1700-1800 with the name William Baillie for Inverness. Above are the names of the parents next to Williams name. If any of these parents names ring any bells then you can download the birth cert on scotlands peoples website.
Hope this helps

Hi Baillie & McBlondie
Best wishes
Lesley
If the births had been after 1855 that would be possible...but as they are all pre-1855, they are not available online yet, I'm afraid. They will be available to download someday though, as that project is in progress. If any of these parents names ring any bells then you can download the birth cert on scotlands peoples website.
Best wishes

I just looked at the Surname-Profiler site. It is really amazing. I understand that what you can conclude from it are very generic and basic, but that is exactly what I need to start with right now. The map really gives a great idea where to start with my searches.
Beofre I was taking a stab at any Baillie name that I might find, causing me to jump all over the country with my searches. This clues me in on what counties to start with and what order to search the counties in.
A great tip, thanks guys.
McBLONDIE
I did a search awhile back on Scotlands People for births of child's names; Alexander Baillie 1799 or Daniel Baillie 1800 with parents William and Margaret. without any luck. However, now that I think about it, I'm not sure if I tried any variences in the last name spelling.
