1957 Edinburgh newspaper photograph

Post by maggie » Fri Dec 01, 2006 9:38 am

Hello
can i please ask advice on where to find /who to contact for newspaper archives for Edinburgh for the year 1957.
I am seeking a photograph that was supposedly printed in the Edinburgh evening news or the Edinburgh evening dispatch of a wedding that took place on September 7th.
the "story" behind this search is i have a work collegue who's parents married in Edinburgh and they don't have any copies of photographs took that day it would seem that their "bestman" was the only photographer and he gave the photos to the newspaper to print.
The groom was on unauthorised extended leave from the army (AWOL)
and spent some time spud bashing or worse  for the crime.
So no copy of the memorable occassion is in their possesion which their children would like to rectify if at all possible as next year will be their 50th anniversary of married life my collegue has turned to me for help and i in turn come to the good people on TS for help :)
Is there any old romantics out there that can help with this?
kind regards
maggie

First see http://www.edinphoto.org.uk/5/6_bibliog ... spatch.htm , and the Edinburgh Evening New is published by the same company that now owns The Scotsman.

So go to http://members.scotsman.com/contact.cfm , and take your choice, - phone or email, - perhaps "Digital Archive - Research Enquiry"?

Except that, - see -

Please note: We are unable to undertake individual enquiries relating to historical articles or matters. Back copies of the newspapers are held on CD and or microfilm (depending on age) at certain major libraries, including Edinburgh Central Public Library, the National Library of Scotland in Edinburgh, the Mitchell Library in Glasgow and the British Library in London.

We regret that we cannot look up old friends or family for you and we do not provide research into family histories. We will not give out contact details or personal information for private individuals and most companies can be found online through search engines.

So looks like your colleague will need to pay a visit to one of these libraries, or get someone to do that on their behalf. Presumably the exact date of the marriage is known !

Hi Maggie,

The Edinburgh Central Library's Edinburgh Room has the Evening News back issues on microfilm. You will find a link to their webpage on the "libraries" page of TalkingScot.

Scotsman Publications would be the other place, as publishers of the Evening News.

All the best,
