Genes Reunited

Post by Miss Poohs » Thu Dec 21, 2006 8:14 pm

am I really thick - or is it awkward to use?

I can never get an "answer" from it.

Is it only really any use if you pay to join, I just don't seem to get any info from it at all:?

What sort of "answer" exactly are you looking for on it ? I was under the impression you could only use it if you paid to be a member other wise nothing would happen :? I am a member and really all you can do is search compatible names and mail the submitter and hope for the best :!:

Well like when I get sent the new hot matches - I can never actually find any to view, so how do I know if they are my rellies?

I find it very difficult to navigate my way round the sire.

' feel like a bit of a numpty now #-o

Naw naw, yer no' a numpty. There's nothing to view apart from the name of the person, date and place of birth. You don't know if they're anything to do with yours until you contact the other person. Problems with Hot Matches have been discussed elsewhere on TS, but let's say it leaves a lot to be desired. I wish I'd never mentioned John Smith on my tree

Often you end up with 14 pages of "Hot Matches" that aren't, occasionally you get a lucky strike - ha ha no pun intended

Best wishes

I see it's all been updated etc and I hate it! Far prefer the old version - too complicated for the likes of me

I agree Fiona, i dont bother too much now with it. If i want to look for someone i will put the name in and search the usual way but i havnt done that for a while either so dont know if thats affected as well.

I do find it annoying when they keep changing "the face" of GR which is really far too often :x I never see on it if they ask users opinions of the changes :?:

Hi Tracy
I will be seriously thinking about not renewing my subscription later on this year. There's no doubt that it certainly helped me in the beginning for which I'm grateful.

I sympathise about the difficulties with the genes reunited site, ( I still use the "Old Tree" system), and the Hot matches aren't so hot, I agree. But I have been contacted by distant (and not too distant) relatives, which has been marvellous. Even come across one of my lost first cousins (much older than me) who last saw me when I was a year and a half old (60 years ago!!) This contact was through his grandson who wrote " my grandfather thinks you are his first cousin". Yes indeedy!!. That was this time last year.
When things like this happen I think it is worth it. , and I ignore the rest, especially the "Smiths" and the "Kellys".
Forunately most of my names are not as common as that and my husband's are fairly unusual too. Makes life a bit easier. I'll renew my subscription as you never know!
The only downside is when you find a connection you know is right and you don't get a reply from the other person. That can be infuriating!!
Cheers

Hi Annpa:

Mine are mostly Kellys and Smiths, and since I joined in August, I've not had ONE single connection.

Even following up on just my James Kelly son of John Kelly and Christina Lipsett has been a bust. I'm well over 60 e-mails and find that many are not even answered.

It's extremely vague at times, and the constantly changing visuals and formats are very annoying.

I don't think I'll renew, so there will be even more people sending messages into the great abyss, never to receive an answer.
