Hi everyone

Please excuse my ignorance here, but can someone tell me what kind of records i may find in Park Circus? I know where the place is and how to get there andI have often seen posts of people chatting about it. I'm just unsure of what records they hold?

I was at Park Circus yeaterday.
You can access all the BMD Certificates from 1855 online,also Census Records for 1841 to 1901. Easy to use system & covers all of Scotland. You can also search for OPR records for Strathclyde Region(not quite sure what this covers) & view them on Microfiche.Also Divorce Records from 1984.
You have to book ahead,but,if you phone on the day you may be lucky enough to get a cancellation-I have the last twice.

Very good value but be prepared before you go.

They are on microfilm for the west of Scotland only and can be viewed for free at The Mitchell Library.

Although I would think when the OPRs go online on the 25th they will also be available at Park Circus.

Just a wee bit more about Park Circus, Glasgow (also applies to NRH, Edinburgh).
Unlike Scotlandspeople you can't search using *wildcards*.
Names must be exactly as GROS has them indexed.

This can make it difficult for those "awkward" names that have many variations.
So that's why i often use wildcards on SP if i think a name could be spelled in a few different ways.
Then i can use this list of alternative names when looking at Park Circus.

By the way; on near every visit i've come across names mis-indexed; last time i was there i saw Mray for Mary - twice!
And a few months ago i was looking for someone who i knew was born in 1915.
Not there! And oddly no one of the name in that year.
(the years before and after 1915 averaged 20 names).
So i checked the fiche index, and there he was.
The online GROS index had omitted everyone of the name in that year....

Park Circus is well worth a visit, and you'll soon be wanting to return!
The link up via computer to the GROS indexes has been a great step forward.
Some of my ancestors' names are Brown, Campbell, Kerr, McDonald, and these can now often be found on the day.
Previously it could've taken me weeks to find them using the fiche indexes (still useful though).
And the staff at Park Circus are very helpful.
As Susan says, be prepared with your list, and try to stick to it if possible.
But you'll probably get side-tracked...at least that always happens to me!

Correct in terms of surnames on the DIGROS system. This may change when the new Scottish Family History Centre opens in Edinburgh, hopefully towards the end of 2007.

However, on the old green on black search system at NRH, there are limited alternate name search options. Despite the inconvenience involved in having to repeat a search on DIGROS in order to view the image, this "double" search can save substantial time. I'm unsure if Park Circus has ever used that system.

As regards given names, DIGROS has a limited wildcard facility, in that there is an implied widlcard at the end of the search string used, i.e. searching for " MAR " is equivalent to " MAR* " so will produce hits for MARY, MARTHA, MARGARET, etc.; but you cannot insert a wildcard in the middle of a search string as on ScotlandsPeople, e.g. " MA*G* " to return both MARGARET and MAGGIE, - unfortunately.

Both old & new systems are available at Park Circus. Another researcher was given advice to use both as wildcard couldn't be used on DIGROS for surnames.

Hello Karen,

You can get prints of records with same date parameters as SP at a cost of 50p. You can order extracts for more modern records at a cost of around £8.
They do have spaces for your laptop but you cannot plug them in to the electricity supply - battery power only.
