Hi Every one,
Just thought I would ask if anyone is going to The Mitchell Library any time soon. If so can I be cheeky and ask a huge favour. Could some one look on the electoral register for 243 Bath Street, Glasgow in the years 1916/17. There should be Sarah Todd, my grandmother, and I was just wondering who she was living with.
Many Thanks in advance
Regards
Anne.

Electoral Rolls Glasgow
Hi Anne,
I'd a look today, but there are no electoral rolls for the war years....
So no mention of gr-mother Sarah Todd.
However i looked at the ones nearest to 1916/17 for 243 Bath St.
--
1913/14 - Municipal Ward 14.
James Macvean, steward, lodger.
Norman Macvean, draper, lodger
Montague Macvean, traveller, lodger
Reginald Willis, clerk, lodger.
--
1918 - Municipal Ward 14.
Mrs. Elizabeth McVean.
a Norman McVean, soldier.
a Montague McVean soldier.
a James McVean, soldier.
a Colin McVean, soldier.
a Reginald Willis, soldier.
--
Can only presume the wee "a" before the names means "absent". In war service?
Could your granny Sarah have been working for the McVean family?
Does her occupation on marriage suggest this? Eg - domestic / house servant? or similar?

Jack, What a star. Yes Sarah was a domestic servant in 1917 and obviously it was to this family as they are there quite a few years. That answers my question as I wondered if she was with my g.grandmother and she isnt. Thank you so much. That really is very appreciated.

Anne.

Just a wee aside...
Women would not have been allowed anywhere near a voting slip before 1918...
In 1918 women over thirty years of age were given the vote (it was age 21 for men).
It wasn't until 1928 that women over 21 were trusted with the vote

Hi JimM
Thank you for that, I wasnt aware of it. I found that really interesting. In 1917 when Sarah married she was only 26, so that could explain that, also I am trying to locate when she would have gone to Glasgow and who with, as she is a Yorkshire lass. I wondered if she was with my g.grandmother as she was in England prior to those dates.
Many Thanks.
Anne

Re: The Mitchell
Thanks Jim,
So that would explain why Mrs Elizabeth McVean wasn't shown in 1913/14.
It had me wondering!
