If you go to www.ancestry.ca you can get 3 days access to the Ancestry Canadian collection for free - also seems to include access to Scottish census transcriptions.

Never mind the Scottish censuses - I've just discovered a whole a family, brother of my great grandmother on the 1901 Canadian census. The only previous proof of existence was an envelope addressed to the PO Box in British Columbia [woohoo]

Try here as well Muriel and perhaps you can see them in 1911 as well.

Thanks Heather,

I have searched for them in 1911 but with no success. In 1901 in Victoria City BC there was Malcolm M. Crawford, 39, born Scotland; Lizzie, wife, 39, born Scotland; Bessie, daughter, 17, born Scotland; David, son, 14, born Scotland; Josephine, 10, born Scotland; Malcolm, 8, born Scotland; and Valentine, son, 6, born USA.

I have found deaths for Malcolm M. on 9 July 1942 in Burnaby, Elizabeth on 12 Oct 1938 & daughter Josephine on 22 June 1969 both in Burnaby as well. But of the others, no sign. Still, at least I've got something & other things may emerge in due course.

Muriel

I think they are indexed as Cramford - easiest to find Valentine first ,, because Malcolm's name has been very oddly transcribed.

Sally

Many thanks - I'm not very good with wildcards but having found them I can see why the transcribers found it difficult! Poor Malcolm is actually Malcolm McCallum Crawford. They do seem to have caught up with his wife's age - she was recorded in 1901 as being born on 13 January 1862 whereas she was really born on 27 January 1855! It's nice to know that they're there though.

PS. I've been showing your photo of you grandfather & his pals to all the old Leithers I can find but no luck yet!

Thanks for the info Sally.
I did a search in ancestry for my gt g/father in the Scottish 1861 census & up he came!
I had previously checked on SP & he is not indexed, but he is there in the household, as I found, when I used another person's name to show the image on SP.
A good lesson for me. SP are not infallible & a no show from them is not necessarily the end of the trail.
Thanks
Ron
