1891

Post by HeatherH » Thu Mar 01, 2007 7:48 pm

The 1891 census index has been added to ancestry.co.uk.
They now have availlable 1841, 1851, 1861, 1871, and 1891. No idea why 1881 was missed.

Hi Heather,
Odd, since the 1891 and 1901 have been on Ancestry.com for years (or at least a year?) Don't understand why the two websites don't go in tandem when it is presumably the same company... The 1881 isn't there because it is available for free on the Familysearch.org site, although this is only transcriptions and not images. The same thing on SP for the Scottish 1881 census. I do wish they would get the actual images up somewhere for these.
All the best,
Sarah

Sarah,

Where do you find the 1881 Scotland census on familysearch.org? When I tried to find it under "census", the closest was the British one not including Scotland.

Hi Kathy,
Maybe I misunderstood what you were saying. You mean the 1891 Scotland census is on ancestry.co.uk? In which case, you have more coverage on that site, since the only ones on ancestry.com are 1841, 1851 & 1861 so far, although they announce 1871 & 1891 "soon".

The FamilySearch site census does not include Scotland, but the 1881 census on SP is a transcription that I thought came from the LDS church. Maybe I am wrong there, but I thought that since it was made available by them, it is either free (in the case of England, Wales and the U.S. 1880) or at minimal cost, in the case of the Scottish 1881 on SP.

All the best,
Sarah

P.S. Okay, I just checked on ancestry, and  there are the 1871 and 1891 censuses for Scotland! In spite of their having sent me a message not half an hour ago with updates that did not include those! The email I just got says that they are "coming soon". So, just forget everything I just said  and I'll start digging into the new database :D

I think you'll find that both 1871 & 1891 census 'transcriptions' (see numerous threads on this in the census section) are on ancestry.co.uk I've had a quick look around 1891 and found a Veitch family listed as Witch, which I'm sure they'd be thrilled about!

Hello Sarah,
Have had access to Ancestry.com for 2 years and never saw any scottish census until they were also released on Ancestry.co.uk. As for the 1881 on Family search its only England and Wales again no Scotland. Not sure when they moved Scotland from the Uk as many other sites also boast full UK coverage and when you get there find its only down south.
Any thoughts on the geography anyone?

Hi Heather

South of the border many English people appear to suffer from Myopia and cannot see beyond their own border.
National weather forecasts discuss the weather for Manchester, London, Newcastle even, then give the forecast for Wales (the town of ... :( ) and Scotland (as though those north of the border all share the same weather patterns
When a newsworthy event happens they report from Wellyn or Cramlington and everyone is expected to know where that is.
Scottish events need comments like Paisley - Glasgow or Inverness - Scotland so that the place is located in this foreign country.
Its a very introverted attitude which I find quite odd.
