Davie to McDougall

Post by Muriel » Wed Mar 07, 2007 10:44 am

I've been looking for years for information on my GGgrandmother, Isabella McDougall. Through SarahND I discovered that she & husband Thomas Ross emigrated to Massachusetts where Isabella died in 1896. Unfortunately there was no image available for her death so I've got no indication of the names of her parents & altho' she always said she was born in Barony (about 1808) I couldn't find her birth. However, she & Thomas seem to have followed the Scottish naming pattern so I expected her parents to be David & Jean.

I've since checked that the OPRs for their children & discovered a David McDougall as witness to a couple of them. Sooo I searched for David's birth & found a David McDougall born in 1796 to David McDougall & Jean Harrison. That seemed really good so I set off to find a marriage. If I check under McDougall I get nothing but if I check under Harrison I come up with "David Davie weaver in this parish & Jean Harrison in Greenock" proclaimed & married in Barony July 1790. This has to be them doesn't it - doesn't it :?: :?: :?:

But WHY :-k

Hi Muriel,

I'd be very inclined to say NO, I'm afraid, unless he changed his name at some point

ON the IGI there appears to be a family of seven "Davie" children getting married between 1782 - 1791, including the one you mentioned...

ROBERT DAVIE Marriage: 17 AUG 1788 Barony, Lanark, Scotland
DAVID DAVIE Marriage: 04 FEB 1787 Barony, Lanark, Scotland
DAVID DAVIE Marriage: 11 JUL 1790 Barony, Lanark, Scotland
JEAN DAVIE Gender: Female Marriage: 27 MAR 1791 Barony, Lanark, Scotland
GEORGE DAVIE Marriage: 10 JUL 1785 Barony, Lanark, Scotland
WILLIAM DAVIE Marriage: 24 MAR 1782 Barony, Lanark, Scotland
JEAN DAVIE Gender: Female Marriage: 07 JUL 1782 Barony, Lanark, Scotland

Can't see any sign of a David McDougall getting married in the rough period in Lanark. Sorry I can't be more encouraging :(

Hi Mary

Thanks for the views - I hadn't thought of checking the other Davies  What had muddied my waters is David McDougall's birth record for June 1796 (it's not on the IGI but is in the OPR) which reads: McDougald. David McDougald ?Nailer Calton & Jean Harrison had their 1st child born 4th bapd 17th named David. Hugh Miller & John B? wit.

There can't have been many Jean Harrisons in Scotland at that time (a quick search of the IGI shows possibly 3 born 1780 +/- 10 in Scotland). On the other hand a period of 6 years between marriage & the birth of the first child seems rather long. Perhaps Jean married David Davie, was widowed quite quickly & then married David McDougall/d. Whatever his occupation is it isn't a weaver as there are others listed on the same page who are weavers & the word looks quite different.

Off to check the IGI again to see if David 1 & Jean have any children listed.

No Isabella was McDougall - she married Thomas Ross in 1824 in Eaglesham. There is no indication of her parentage on the marriage entry, it's one of those supremely unhelpful ones!

Yes, I'd found them. Of the 2 I'd prefer the David one as I'm sure the name David came in from the McDougall side - I've got the previous generation of Rosses & there's no David there. Also a David McDougall (3 times) & a John McDougall (once) witnesses the baptisms of Isabella & Thomas' children. Other witnesses were Thomas' brothers & a couple of names I don't know. Can't find the birth of a John McDougall either - I think they must have been/become dissenters.

I guess I'll just have to wait until I can get to Massachusetts & look at Isabella's death certificate! Won't be this year, anyway.
