Registery Offices

Post by Pandabean » Tue Mar 20, 2007 9:32 pm

I was told a while back (cant remember if I mentioned it in a post before) that you can go into some registery offices and searches can be carried out into post SP cut off dates (1906, 1931 & 1956). Does anyone know if this service exists and how much it is likely to cost?

Hi Andy
It is certainly available in some areas - e.g.St Andrews in Fife for instance. But the searches are "Registrar led" which means you don't get to do the searching yourself, the registrar does it, and the cost is £20 per hour.

An Aberdeen one seems to exist, but does not give details:

- at bottom of page.
Best wishes

Seems a tad expensive. £15 per hour for a computer based search. It doesnt tell you if thats per search or if you have an hour to do as much as you can. On top of that it is £8.50 for a certificate.

Probably would work out cheaper to head to Edinburgh for the day.

Hi Andy
Irvine Registry Office has this service where they link up to Register House in Edinburgh.
Searches are almost to the present day where you sit with member of staff and you can transcribe from the print-outs with a pencil (they then tear them up) you are allowed to keep older documents.
Their service is £10 an hour.

Hi Andy
Forgot to say you are allowed as many searches as you can in the hour you have. I suppose its OK if you can't manage to Park Circus or Edinburgh, but I'd rather do the searches myself and someday hope to go to Park Circus.

Hi Rita,
If you are thinking of going up to Park Circus in the next few months, then you'd better phone them soon....
They are nearly fully booked till the end of May....
Unless you want to get up (very) early for the one "first come: first served" space that is always available on the day.
There are only 12 seats in all at Park Circus - so nothing like the size of NRH, Edinburgh.

pps, cost at Park Circus goes up a £1 to £14 per day from 1st April.

Hi Jack
Won't be able to go to Park Circus with my sister when she comes as couldn't work out free days etc, BUT I did manage a day at the Mitchell last week and you were right will need more than one day and thanks for the directions I printed them off and they really helped.
I managed to get 4 Poor reliefs and saw many more, my Print-outs arrived yesterday one of them was 7 pages and is like a book of her life she died before she was 30.
Another of them was very hard to read as the page on the book was like tracing paper and the ink had run over the words, however the others were quite good and will read them all later when I have more time.

Don't hesitate to put an image of problematic pages in the Gallery here so that other pairs of eyes can have a look .........

Standard phrases and abbreviations, not least in terms of placenames, can at first appear impenetrable.
