Has anyone had experience of using the American site www.newspaperarchive.com ? It looks like it may have some interest for me, but as it is a pay site I would welcome any one's experience, before parting with dollars.
Thanks
Ron

Hi Ron

I've looked at it before but haven't given them any money yet. When I looked in depth at the time periods each paper covers it can be quite limited. I don't want to discourage you but be certain it has what you want before you pay. If there is a specific newspaper you want and they have it then ok...but if it's a general area and a range of years then be wary. There are other possible sources for historical newpapers too.

Best wishes
Jean

I agree with Jean on that, Ron. I actually went to look for something at the University in Michigan which is near to me. I checked the note on what was available, but wasn't aware of the very restrictive dates. It seems paper archives are a bit hit and miss.

Which paper are you interested in? What time frame? A specific article or event? Maybe someone on this side of the pond may be near enough to check if their local library or university library provides access.

The US flavor of Ancestry.com has a bunch of online newspapers and when you look at them they say 'newspaperarchive.com' at the bottom.

I've had better luck looking through papers around the right date/place if I'm looking for a specific event, but sometimes searching the OCR generated indexes will provide a pleasant surprise.

Thanks all,
I was looking for info on Cleveland, Ohio, with dates from 1880 onwards. Obituaries from 1905 onwards. I dont know which newspaper would be most relevant. The district is Cuyahoga.
Thanks
Ron

Hi Ron,
I'm not seeing any Cleveland newspapers :? There are a number from Elyria, which is not that far off... but for some reason Cleveland is missing from the collection (unless it's my eyes?) I assume you have the death dates, but would like the obituaries to go with them? If you give some names and dates I could try to search and hope something might come up.
All the best,
Sarah

Hi Sarah,
I couldnt see any Cleveland newspapers either. I have looked at present Cleveland papers, but none go back to the early 1900's.
Thanks for your help.
